I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You! Xoxo

Oh God...
To all of you who know me, I have had the BEST doc in the world, and I found out this morning that he is moving away.
I wont let any one from the other two sH@tty practices in this cowtown touch me, and even though hes only going to be 5 hours away, its a shock. The other docs from the two practices, refer ppl to PM clinic to the 6 hour city. they have NO knowledge of PM here. PLus the 12,000+ft passes along with the snow and ice that start in Oct here are tretcherous. You do NOT want to be on those roads ever.
I know all of you probably have worse, but its such a HUGE shock.
I finally found someone who I can trust and knows me, and this happens. I feel like someone kicked me in the gut.
Thanks for any support, help or xoxox I can get from by buddies.
I just need some support...

I will write later or tomorrow AM the whole situation and conversation. Im absolutely wiped. Hes been doing "rent a Doc," now for 3 months and I didnt know, nor did he that this would be permanant, but it is. Say a prayer for me, please. Im happy for him, but yet so bummed. Scared to death is the best I can describe it.

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Hi Izzys,

OMG you poor woman! I don't know if you remember, but I went through the same thing last year and I know how it feels, it's like the rug was just yanked out from under your entire life!

I was especially worried because I have NO medical insurance. But, I did find someone to take me on, who listens and wants to help and so will you, I promise!

How far is your doctor going? It might be worth asking him to keep you on as a patient, even if it means a long trip every few months. Or you could ask him to recommend someone. (that didnt work for me) Or you could ask friends or family for their recommendations.

The good news is that once you are stable on meds, most doctors are willing to keep you on them, or at least tirate you off slowly and add something else they are more comfortable with. Very few doctors would just stop all your meds abruptly.

Take it one day at a time, make a list of every option you can think of, and move down the list one at a time. If you dont find someone right away, do not give up, go to the ER or urgent care if you have to, and keep trying. Maybe there is a new doctor somewhere fairly close, and young docs especially are likely to keep you on something you have been taking for years.

Keep posting here, I'm sure lots of people will have ideas for you, and remember you are not alone! We're all here cheering you on and trying to help out any way we can.

Stay strong, and dont give up!

Hugs, Fabby

OMG!!! I AM SO SORRY. ((((((((HUGS))))))))))) and PRAYERS. This is everyones worst nightmare. I have lived thru it twice recently and it is the worst. All I can suggest is explain to this doctor that is leaving that you are going to begin looking for a doctor and in the meantime you will stay will him until you find someone closer who is acceptable. I am sure he will work with you. GOOD LUCK and I am PRAYING everyday for you until I hear good news.

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Hey Izzy, Have you discussed the posibility of telemedecine. He can consult over the phone, and mail you scripts, preferabbly 90 days supplies if your insurance or state allows it. Even medicare sees telemedecine as a viable source for healthcare in rural areas.

If anyone was going to do it, the fact he has seen you , does have the charting and can maintain the charting certainly makes it more legitimate. Perhaps you could still see him in person twice a year which is more than many telemed providors actually do, may make it something he's more wiling to consider.

It's certainly worth looking into and discussing with your doc. I do think there are some not so legitimate telemed sites and practices, but with a doc that has physicaly seen his patients and continues to do so to some degree, it takes the shadyness out fo something that other docs and patients may be abusing when they have never even sen the faces of the people they prescribe too. Another option is the newer pumps that allow 4-6 month refills once your titrated. Just a thought, neccessity is the father of invention. The scenario is ideal for a legitamte telemed scenario and perhaps you can gather enough info about this newer form of healthcare to make the idea more comfortable and even apealing to your present doc.

There is always someone that has a worse scenario, you shouldn't feel bad about that, but risking your life to travel through the mountains in winter, sound more like a scene from Jeramia Johnson than truly taking advantage of the legitimate tools the govt has made available. Tele-medecine is one of those tools.

Sorry this has happened and I do hope things work out for ya.
Take care, Dave

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Thanks everyone!
Shore, that is an EXCELLENT idea. Its not the money, its the fact that there isnt anyone else here that I havent seen, and none of them would help me. The most they would prescribe was ultram and even having seizures on it, they would only allow that. Talk about crazy. They have no clue about PM, but the one local doc gives narcs out like candy and pot med cards like the lottery to all of his buddies. THIS guy has been my Godsend.
Thganks again for all of the positive posts. It does suck and Ill have to try to see what he can do for me. He knows IM an excellent pt. Never in trouble for my scripts, act, nada.
Im sick today so IM going to make this short, but thanks again to all who lifted me up in your thoughts ~

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Hey Izzy,

I am so sorry this has happened! How scared you must be?! Don't worry, we'll get you through this! I live in a small town too, and while my pm leaves much to be desired, he's better than the other options! I really liked Shore's idea. That seems like it would work great, and you have a good relationship with this doctor. So please call him, and ease your mind. At least you will know if it is an option or not. Good luck and please keep us posted!

Your Friend,

Amanda

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Hey Izzy ......I don't know what is going on with doctors these past 6 months - there must be a HUGE black hole that is sucking them out of their offices. You've lost yours, Fabby has gone through it not too long ago, Butterfly went through it and I lost TWO within 3 months of each other. On top of that, I just sent a letter today withdrawing from the practice that I've been going to since 2002 because the new doc has absolutely no compassion, empathy or common sense!! I too am scared to death - I've not had to find a new doc in so long and now I'm going to have to start all over. Thank God that I have a primary care physician who is willing to write my scripts for me until I can find a new pain management doc. It took me almost 6 years to find the clinic that I've been going to since 2002 - and for those six years I was under medicated, misunderstood and treated like a drug addict. But, this isn't about me it's about you sweetie and I really do feel for you. I can only tell you what I'm planning on doing and perhaps we can compare notes on how to find a new doc. The first thing I'm going to do is get my complete medical file from my current PM doc and then I'll look on the WEB for all the anesthesiologists/pain management docs from Baltimore to Northern Virginia. Hopefully they will have websites that give a bit of a clue about how they practice medicine and what they offer. I know that no doctor is going to advertise in big, blinking letters on the internet that they DO believe in prescribing narcotics for pain, but there has to be some way of finding out if they completely rule them out. Perhaps I can speak to a nurse in the practice over the phone before deciding if an "informational" appointment is worthwhile. Who knows Izz - Somehow it always seems to work itself out in the end. I'll keep reading your posts and sending good wishes your way. Dave's suggestion about tele-medicine is very interesting and I'm sure with all the technical advancements at hand we won't be far from the day when it becomes a normal part of a medical practice. You take care, take a deep breath and don't give up!! Hugs - Memere (K'mac)

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

oh No Izzy, this is horrible. I had a feeling this might happen do to his age and you always sort of mentioned how scared you were to loose him and because you menioned it before, I thought the same thing could happen.

I am terribly sorry, but I do think shorline's idea is a good one. But I do think you will have to travel to see him possibly every 3 months. As you recall, my pain Dr got shut down and my PCP took over my meds and said I will only see him every 3 months. That would be better than nothing because believe me, PM Docs can keep you waiting for a LONG time and it often took me all day to get into see my pain Doc, 5 hours was not unusual for me, so even if you have to do a 5 hour drive you would at least be safe and know your not going to loose him again....

Espeically since he adores you so much and you adore him, than I bet he will be honered to have you as his patient at his new practice..
Good luck and post back to us as soon as you find out if he will take you.

Hugs and good thoughts are coming your Way Izzy. I know it will work out for you one way or another, as you are a great person and very compliant and smart, not to mention sweet so I know what ever happens you will be taken care of. I know it.

SS

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Dang! What's going on? Doctors are dropping like flies!
I only see my pm once a year or if my primary thinks I need a med change.
I can't remember...do you have a primary? Is that an option for you?
I really like Dave's idea. I think it would work for you because your doc seems to be very understanding and flexible. I think you would agree that if you couldn't do the 'telemedicine' thing the drive(however far) would be worth it.
I live in fear that this will happen to me and it sure seems like it's just a matter of time. The bottle will stop spinning and it won't be a kiss that I get when it's pointing at me!!LOL

Please keep us posted and I'll be pulling for you and thinking of you.~Mush

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Ouch! I'm sorry. It wouldn't be that big a deal if I lost my pm doc. If I lost my primary I'd be devastated. I've been seeing her for ten years(since we moved here) and she really understands. I hope you find someone as caring and understanding as your current guy.

How far away is your doc moving? I know I'd drive for hours to keep my doc. I do drive to the next town. And your son...change is always hard for kids...no fun. Take care~Mush

Re: I Found Out This Morning That My Doc Is Leaving! C'mon My Friends, I Need You!

Just wanted to say I sure sympathize with you. My primary passed away years ago, he was not that old & his death was a shock, we had went to him for years, he was the most understanding doctor I had ever seen, just an all around nice guy. When my neice was sick & had no insurance I was going to pay for her visit & when he found out he said no way this is on the house, meds & all. Never had I met another doc like him. I just recently found a doctor(after trying several) that I feel comfortable with. So I really do understand. There have been so many times I have said if he was still around I would have not went through some of the nightmares I have encountered with other docs. I hate even having to see new specialists, so I sure hope everything works out for you & will keep you in my thoughts. Sammy
