Fentanyl patches

I am the father of a young girl 22 with two children I want to relate my story so others may avoid what I have gone through. My daughter came to my home with her kids fell and broke her leg after over 2 years of MISTREATMENT she was forced to go in and have her leg amputated. She was in a {removed} for about two weeks was then released with two 75 micro gram Fentenyl patches, she went to sleep after a visit from home health care nurses and a very good dinner and when 6.00am came we her mother and I found her deceased in her bed. She was on Fentenyl patches for a couple of years and I saw her very hi and very low, she had very dry skin and I believe that depending on her skin she would obsorb more and other times less however this time the patches we recalled. The recall came to us on 02/15/04 she lost her life on the night before. I could get no legal representation from anyone or help from anyone her death certificate shows she had nearly double the amount to kill a person. My advice to anyone using Fentenyl patches is get off of them because the only oversite at the company making them is a visual inspection for my daughter it is too late but for others you need to know that they can kill you before you have any idea anything is wrong and it is OK it seems with the medical, legal and manufacturing people to loose a few but it makes no sense to me to put on a patch that may or may not be delivering the correct amount of medicine. Just immagine to fight a broken leg for two years and have 6 seperate infections in the leg and the only things the docs do is cover their buts. In my opinion the FDA (whom we all know protects us ) ha needs to remove these pain patches from the market I have used them myself and I know they work until you need to get off of them I went Cold Turkey and it took over a month sheer heck. I was lucky tho I kept my life but I am now raising two grandchildren when I thought I was finished raising kids. I just have to let other people know. Blueram

Re: Fentanyl patches

Blueram:
I am very sorry that you lost your daughter and I can only imagine how much anger and rage that you have. However, medical mistakes can and do happen. I am currently on the patch and I know just how dangerous they can be. I believe that recall has only happened once during the entire time that the fentanyl patch has been on the market.

I had to think long and hard before I started the patch. I knew the possible danger in using it. I read all of the warnings and information and knew just how bad the withdrawal would be if I ever needed to stop wearing. However, it allows me to be able to function and cope with the pain. A mistake could happen with any medication that could possibly kill a person. I do applaud you for telling your story but to tell everyone that wears a patch to stop using them is not appropriate. I am trying to be considerate of your feelings and I can not even imagine the kind of emotional pain that you have been through. I hope other people on the board here will state their opinion on the use of the patch.

Brian

Re: Fentanyl patches

Blueram, I too am so sorry for your loss and can't even imagine the way you feel. I totally appreciate your telling of your experience. I too have done that recently with my mom's experience with a Medtronic pain pump. I am also on the patch and did the research like Brian before deciding this was an option for me. Again like Brian the patch allows me to have some resemblence to a normal life. The risks associated to the patch are ones I am willing to take.

Again thank you for sharing your story and I am sorry for your loss.

Melissa
