| Vitamin D deficiency and pain, food for thought
I was prompted last winter by my psychiatrist to have my D levels checked. Lack of D causes many problems including depression, early osteoporosis, pain and more. During that time I switched primary doctors and when he did a routine blood work I asked for my D levels to be checked. I was horrified with the results!
A normal D level is 20, mine was 5! My primary believes that some of the early degeneration and pain of my spine in fact may be related to this. 400mg of D a day is not enough if you do not get it naturally via the sun. In fact the FDA underrates the amount our bodies really need. It takes incredibly high levels of 50,000 IU or more a day for long periods before toxicity sets in. This information can easily be found with some research. Many studies have been done on the effects of low levels of D.
While my PM doesn't "buy into it" I've done a ton of research to completely back up what my two other doctors were stating and how badly our bodies need it and how it in fact can cause pain or make pain worse. Sometimes I think he's just stubborn and wants to think the only answer to pain control is narcotics and injections.. but thats another story for another day.
It might be worth while to considering having your levels checked the next time someone does a blood draw on you.
