Hydrocodone Constipation

Ive been prescribed hydrocodone for my back pain for about 3 months now and the only side effect I have is constipation. Some weeks im fine and some im not. Ive been constipated for about 2 weeks now. Whats the best remedy for opiate constipation? and does anybody else get constipated from opiates?

Thanks

Bromalin which is the extract of the pinapple works like a charm. Should find it in your local health food store.

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

I think just about everyone on opiods deals with this problem. Miralax is a good problem solver, it's available OTC in most chain drugstors. A stool softner also helps.

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

Hi!
I have to deal with this problem due to Vicodin and Cymbalta.

Mirilax on a regular basis-not just when I get backed up-plus daily doses of Colace work for me. If I get really backed up-like can't go for 5 or more days-
I am miserable! I sometimes have to resort to a Fleet enema to get things going. All I can tell you is what works for me and all is over the counter. I hope you can find a balance for yourself-all of us here seem to have this problem!

Blessings,
Momz

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

Almost everyone that takes narcotics will have constipation at times in there lives. the key is to drink lots of water, increase your fiber intake and use a stool softner every day to stay ahead of the situation. I Use Colace and Mirilax., both work well for me and are OTC. If you get really plugged up you can try an enema but they have never worked for me and I don't care for them. to messy and painful. some people use them. also prunes work well and there very good cooked into chicken or pasta or plain.

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

I know this past week I thought I was going to die from constipation. I just kept taking stool softeners every night and eating fiber and finally had a little relief. I think I'll do as slipperyslope said and drink plenty of water and take the stool softeners everyday whether I think I need to or not.

When my father-in-law was in the nursing home they gave him "Warm Prune Juice" and it worked almost immediately. You might try that. I personally could not drink prune juice.

Good Luck!!!!!!!

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

I was just about to put a post up about the same thing when I seen yours. Since my doctor put me on Avinza I have had the same problem. It was hard enough to go just on perc. I mentioned in a past post while my sisterinlaw was in the hospital they gave her prune juice with vernours, she said it actaully tasted ok & it worked. Even Miralax with softners is not moving me, along with suppositories & mettamucill. So I understand your concerns.
I will have to break down & hope I can stomach the prune juice & vernours.
Good luck & please let us know if something works for you. Sammy

SS is correct....Drink lots of fluids and increase your fiber. I've had excellent success with Metamucil....It's pure husk fiber....Very natural, and works like a charm. It mixes with water in a cup and tastes like a thicker version of orange Gatorade. You may need to experiment with the dosages. Start slow and work your way up until you find what works for you. For me, I use 2 tablespoons in a glass of water...Stir and drink. I take mine every day and never miss. I don't have any problems now and in fact, things work very well! Other good sources of fiber are apples, bran, raspberries, peas, and broccoli.

Be careful of fiber pills. One has to drink lots of fluid with them. If you don't drink enough, they can actually clog you up! I don't think they work nearly as well as the "mix" formulas.

Lastly, laxatives should only be used as a last resort and should not be used on a regular basis. They will get things moving but because it's a "stimulant", they don't work naturally like fiber and some other remedies.

Good luck and take care.

Ex

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

Miralax every morning. It's great. No taste and no mouth feel. I eat a fiber one bar as part of my breakfast and make my sandwich out of double fiber bread. Plenty of water at work -64 oz. at least.

My SIL swears that a glass of WARM prune juice is what they give in the geriatric ward to help those folk who are "bound up". Something about warming the prune juice up seems to do the trick.

Good luck!

Re: Hydrocodone Constipation

opiates make all constipated...that is one of the side affects. to prevent it, take a fiber supplement, eat a lot of bran, and stay hydrated , drinking a lot of water. also, senakot s works very well. if you dont have a bowel jovement in 3 or 4 days, try to plan ahead for one with senakot s....it will make everything more bearable with less worries...
