Morphine and loss of appetite - Pain Management Message Board

My mother is on morphine for pain after a back injury, and she has lost her appetite and is losing weight dramatically. Does anyone have any advice for stimulating appetite or weight gain for someone on morphine? (Other pain meds didn't work for her.) Thanks to any advice you all might have.

Go to G.N.C. health food store and go to the bodybuilding supplements section and get some "Weight Gainer 2200 Gold" it is a shake she can drink, if no G.N.C. around look on the net and find a compatible weight gainer shake. Do not get the basic protein only shake mix she will actually lose weight on that. Get a weight gainer shake mix. these shakes are very healthy, my son has the same problem your mother has, so we tried this and has worked. Be sure to try to eat some solid food in the evening, also take some "Pro-Biotic / Lactobacillus Acidophilus " to help with digestion. Hope this helps.

How long has your Mom been on Morphine for? The reason I ask is that when I first started taking it, I to lost my appetite it took about 10 days for me to feel normal, and now I am doing very well on it and it controls my pain SO well.

Give it some time and hopefully this side effect will go away, you should also let her Dr know about this as maybe her Dr will have a suggestion for her.
