Pain Management in Orange County (Post Surgery) - Pain Management Message Board

To be brief, I have spent the past 8 years working with some of the best Ortho and Neuro Doctors in the area to fix a back injury. I have had injections, a spinal fusion, PT, Tens, etc. I have been told that at this point, there is not much more to do than to manage my pain through medication and a cautious lifestyle. Usually in the past, the pain management centers I have gone to always try to start from square one and try everything again themselves. I need a pain management Dr. who with my medical history and continuous appointments will help manage my pain through medication treatment. I am not talking about an open supply to the pharmacy, but a Dr. who is willing to work with me to reduce my pain while minimizing my dependence on medication. Is anyone aware of a good Dr. in Orange County, California who has these qualities? Thank you very much.

I don't know of any doctors there but I did want to welcome you to the Pain Management board and say that you have found a great group of people that have loads of experience and advice. We have all experiences our own individual injuries but the one thing that we can all relate to is chronic pain.

I would ask your current primary care doctor for a recommendation to a PM doctor in the area that prescribes medication. If they don't know then ask your pharmacist (give them a brief synopsis of your situation). They know the doctors in the area that prescribe medication. Third, ask one of your previous neurologist, or other doctors for their recommendation. If all else fails do an internet search or contact your insurance company and ask them.

You will need a referral to see a PM DR. They normally don't take patients on unless there is a good reason for it and a DR has to refer you. Brian gave you some good advice. Pharmacist are a good resource but in order to not come on like your looking for narcotics, explain your pain condition and all you have been through and are needing narcotics, and do they know of a PM DR that does prescribe. Its going to be a little awkward but do it very professionally and carefully and pull the pharmacist aside in a private area where they do med consults. Good luck Also some GP Dr's will prescribe for chronic pain patients so you could start looking for a new GP Dr, but you will need to bring all your medical records and diagnosis and MRI scans and any other test you have had, also don't mention to the receptionist you are looking for a DR to prescribe narocitcs. They often times will tell you there Dr's don't treat pain so be careful how you word that as well . SS
