Cortical deinhibition?

Hello everyone. My dad suffers from severe TMJ and several other ailments. Recently it has gotten worse and the pain has been intolerable. He has had injections, MRI's, etc, but now a doctor has suggested this surgery/procedure called cortical deinhibition, and to research it. I couldn't seem to find anything, but was hoping someone here could shed some light or point me in the right direction (either for direct resources, or what part of the board this should be posted in).

Thank you for your time.

Re: Cortical deinhibition?

Please make sure you research this and try and get as much info as you can. This is somewhat controversial and does not work in a lot of cases. Has your dad tried massage? My jaw was dislocated when I was teaching a kickboxing class and one of the ladies got a little out of control. I had already had jaw issues and TMJ but that did it. I went through all the stuff, the night bite guard, not eating certain foods, etc. One of my employees was licenced in many different types of massage, including working on the mandible. I was pretty skeptical at first but by the 4th session I was out of pain and the muscles had stopped spasming. My insurance covered it which was an extra bonus. You definaely want to make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing. They work intra-orally, which is a little strange, but it helped me tremendously.

If you go to the web page of American Massage Therapy Association you should be able to look for therapists in your area.

Melissa
