I recently discovered that I am pregnant. I really want to discontinue the Lortab 10 I have been on for 3 months for my lumbar bulging disc. I know I'm going to have to endure some serious pain, but I am not willing to have my baby born addicted to the opiates. I have questioned my doctor about this, but he thinks I should just continue on the meds. I AM AGAINST THIS! I have decided to try some more homeopathic remedies such as accupuncture, etc. What is a reasonable taper that will not throw my body into withdrawal. The doctor is also concerned that the withdrawal may be even more difficult on the baby. I need suggestions, and you all are the only ones who seem to have any compassion about such matters. I appreciate your help!
I agree with you about your baby and the use of opiods. If you can get along without the lortabs then that would be a big plus for the little guy(or gal)!
The lortab 10mgs are usually scored in the middle and are usually easy to break or cut in half. You could try taking half of the Lortab at your regular times. Lets say that you take 10mgs every 6 hours, so now take one-half of the pill(5mgs) every six hours. Do this for several days(about 5 days) untill your body adjusts to half of the dosage.
After several days start stretching out the time you take the 1/2 pill(5mgs)to every 8 hours for a couple of days. Then keep going a little longer between doses.
By now your serum levels of the hydrocodone(Lortab) will be at a level that you should not have much trouble getting off of as far as withdrawal is concerned. You will probably be having more pain related anxiety rather than opiod withdrawal.
As you reduce the dosages be sure to drink plenty of water. Also, if you want to try adding some of your homeopathec remedies as you reduce your dosage that may be of help.
Not all herbs are harmless...especially if you are pregnant. It would be a good idea to consult with your OB/GYN about any herbs or homeopathic remedies before you start taking them. As far as I know there aren't any real problems with real homeopathic remedies, but, some herbs do have some strong properties to them.
I have found that Chamomile has a calming effect and helps rid me of those anxious feelings when reducing or quitting some meds.
Let us know if you are having any problems. I usally check in once a day.

Hi Crazeeladee...I would gladly give you a tip or two, if I can be of some help.
First of all, good move on your part with getting off the Lortabs while you're pregnant. There's nothing harder to watch, than to see a little one going through withdrawal. You are to be commended for doing this, even though you may hurt bad, you're thinking of the baby first.
I have come off the Lortab (Hydrocodone)10's both with and without the doctor's help. If you have your doc's help, it makes it quite a bit easier. Hydrocodone is marketed in 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 mgs. I am currently taking the 10/325 Hydros, but I just started using them as breakthrough medication. Last week my doctor put me on Duragesic, 50ug patches, with a change every 48 hours. I also have the Hydrocodone 10's for BT, one every three hours, as needed.
If you have your doctor's help, it would be fairly simple to just step down to the next strength each week and then when you get to the 2.5's, you can stretch them out as far as you can and then go off as soon as you comfortably can. It should be a pretty easy way to go, with minimal withdrawal symptoms.
If you're doing this on your own you can start by lengthing out the time between doses (say from four to six hours, etc.) and then as Tony 111 mentioned you can cut them in half because they're scored and you can drop to 5 mgs. every four hours and then go to six hours. I would say each step should be about a week. No sooner than five days. If it's possible to get some of the smaller dose (2.5 mgs.) that would help a lot to get you through the next step. If not, you can try to just cut them (5 mgs.) as evenly as possible and repeat the process. That would mean you're cutting the 10's down to 5's and then cutting them again, down to approximately 2.5's. The second cut won't be scored, so it may not come out exact. You'll just have to do the best you can. If you don't have a pill cutter, you can buy them at just about any pharmacy. It'll make cutting them a lot easier.
This will work, if you really want it to and stick to it. Many times I have had to reduce my doseage, usually because I was coming up short before I could refill the RX. I do know you can go from 10 to 5 mgs. without a lot of discomfort. You may not get much pain relief, but you won't go into withdrawal either.
Give it a try and let us know how you're doing. If I can give you any more help, just write in and let me know.

I was on percocet when I found out I was pregnant, I was awaiting back surgery and my Dr's said I had to stay on it because by the time I realized I was about 16 weeks pregnant. I saw the best perinatal specialists in my area they are on discovery health channel often and are super good at what they do. They said that you can deffinately lose a baby to ANY withdrawal from opiates. They said it is really hard on a baby to go through it and can easily cause a miscarriage at any point in pregnancy. I refused to stay on it because I felt awful about the possibility of my baby on that the whole time. I found a Dr an addictionologist although at the time I was not addicted he was used to getting pregnant addicts off drugs. He was even too scared to wean me and besides I was in so much pain and also unable to have the surgery since i ended up pregnant. Now this may sound extreme to you but do you know that Methadone is actually a medication used for pain? It works even better than Lortab actually and since they have been using it on pregnant women who are kicking heroin for years it is more studied and known to be safer during pregnancy. I was embarrased going to the pharmacy because I thought everyone assumed I was on heroin, that is when I found out you can only get it at the pharmacy for pain it is illegal to use it for heroin from a pharmacy they have to go to clinics, so they weren't thinking that about me. Anyway I took the smallest dose possible to control the pain and prevent any withdrawal and when I reached about 34 weeks pregnant I was able to start weaning since if any withdrawl put me into labor the baby was big enough. I was able to wean off completely before her birth and she was born with no addiction or withdrawal. She is now a beautiful perfect healthy 10 month old. I am not really sure I could have made it through my pregnancy without anything for pain. I wanted to but it is more dangerous to go off of it and end up back on it then it is to just stay on a small amount. Methadone is long acting so I was able to take a pretty small amount like 15mg a day and that was enough to make my pain bearable. It works really well for pain. I was able to have my surgery about 6 weeks after her birth, I had to wait since I had a C-section and had to heal from that first. Unfortunately I have had 6 more surgeries since her birth and now the pain medication is becoming a problem. It is hard to get off of it everytime because I get so sick. Now that I know what withdrawl feels like it's no wonder it's hard on a fetus. Good Luck to you and your baby whatever you decide.
