I would like to know what a cortisone epidural
Is and what it is supposed to do for
Chronic back pain degenerative discs.

Epidural Cortizone shots are used to reduce the swelling in your back. The injection is done right around the bundle of nerves in your back that are irriated. If the shot works correctly, the swelling around the nerves will disappate and the pain should go down. Some people have good luck with the shots and some don't. I have had wo and hagoten good relief from them.
