Safest drug to take if you have liver/kidney problems

Just wanted some advice on what would be better to ask my doctor about taking. Going back to him in a couple of days. I have chronic pain from several different conditions. I was taking Lortab 7.5, but I got hooked on them. I wound up in the hospital with kidney failure. Liver disease from the narcotics was a factor in the bad kidney infection that eventually turned into kidney failure and put me in the hospital for several days.

I asked my doc to prescribe some non narcotic pain meds after that. He may have done that anyway with my liver and kidney problems. He prescribed Ultram 50mg twice a day which I've been taking about 6 months now. It's not really helping the worst pain a lot.

I wanted to ask my doc about taking morphine. I know that's a narcotic, but it doesn't affect me the same way. I was in the hospital once before and a different doctor prescribed 4mg of morphine very 4 hours. The nurse was concerned that I might fall if I got up after I had the shot. Lortabs stopped the pain, but they also made me feel high. Morphine never did that. I stopped hurting almost instantly, but never once felt doped up or high and was able to think clear the entire time. I slept a lot better because I was pain free. But, is morphine in pill form safe on the liver and kidneys?

Just wanting some advice on what I could ask the doctor about. Ultram 50mg is just not working to stop my pain anymore.

Re: Safest drug to take if you have liver/kidney problems

I know when I was finally prescribed Oxycontin, the straw that broke the camel's back was that I needed too many Percocets to get the relief I needed. I ended up taking way too much Tylenol in an attempt to get the desired relief. So, he cut out that part of things and now I only take the narcotic component. I don't think they're that bad on your organs, definitely not as bad as Tylenol and Advil. Even if you just took Ocycodone without the Tylenol you'd be better off. Best of Luck to you!

Re: Safest drug to take if you have liver/kidney problems

What exactly are our liver and kidney issues?

50mg of Tramadol twice a day is a tiny dose, I'm not suprised it didnt do anything.

I would ask to try the 200mg ER tablets, 1 twice a day, this is a more normal theraputic does and is more likely to give you some releif.

If not, then you can move onto morphine etc, the realy strong stuff.

Re: Safest drug to take if you have liver/kidney problems

I have been on Methadone for chronic pain for 8 yrs., and the reason the Dr.(pain specialist) put me on them was because they don't do damage to your liver. Something about the way they metabolize. And you don't feel any feeling of euphoria from the beginning. Just relief. I really don't know too much more than that. Just a little input. It truley helps my pain. boomer
