Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

I am 25 years old and just had my labrum repaired along with a (CAM) hip impingment. My symptoms before surgery were pain in groin, hip, low back, back of knee and pain in the buttocks. Its been 4 months post op and groin pain is gone butt the pain in the buttock and back of knee is killing me. It is deep in the middle/upper part of my right buttocks. Feels like a knot that wont go away. Along with tightness or pulling feeling in the back of knee. Its also making entire back super stiff. The doc says he thinks my IT band is very tight causing this pain. I Think he is full of it because i have been doing IT band stretches for months. The more and more I read about my symptoms, It points to periformis syndrome or SI problems. This pain has been ongoing for 2-3yrs and I am getting tired of the docs not knowing what it is. After all the time and money I have put into this, It seems like I am spinning my wheels not going anywhere. If any one out there has had similar problems or have any ideas/direction to point my in; I would be great full. Thanks.

hello, well I'm pretty sure I have similar problems as you but I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help to you. I share your frustration though as it took over a year for the doctors to find out whats going on with me, but 2-3yrs?! you have some serious patience man!
I just had back surgery on a herniated disc but I also think I may have a labral tear. can I ask how they diagnosed the tear? I've had 2 MRI's in the last year on my back but couldn't get them to do my hips while I was in there because of insurance even though the neurosurgeon said it sounds like some things going on with my hips. also does your hips POP in and out of place all the time? thanks and goodluck bud, wish I had more to share with you.

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

When I first noticed the hip problems was when I would be driving to work. I would get out and my hip would feel like it was sticking, not wanting to move like a normal 22 yr old hip. It would then pop and catch all the time. It was actually my second back doctor who said that it sounded like a labral tear. In order to see if she was correct they did a MRI with contrast. So what they did was inject some kind of dye into the hip socket. Boy oh boy was that a blast too. It felt like feeling up a gallon jug with 2 gallons. Haha. Still to this day I don't know how it happened. I competed in power lifting for 5 yrs strong until the hip problems started happening. I also have bad buttocks pain and back pain every day, along with the back of knee pain. The MRI found mild disc desiccation and very mild generalized disc bulging in the L4-L5. They seem to think that not what is causing the pain. Who knows, you feel like you self diagnose yourself every time you step into a doctors office these days. Ill attach my MRI results to give you a better idea of what all I have wrong with me. Good luck.

damn that exactly how I would describe my hip every time right before I get a huge pop out of it(atleast twice a day). boy o boy.. I'm 25 as well btw.

the L-4 - L-5 disc is actually what I just had surgery on. had a huge herniated disc with severely compressed nerves. its kind of funny(not really) that we both have almost identical symptoms. where exactly do you mean when you say groin pain? my muscles in my groin area have ached since I tweaked my back and often burn when I bend or lean over. but before the surgery I would also sometimes get intense pain in my scrotum. does the pain in your buttocks often burn as well?

well now I know why getting my hip added to the mri order never happened, didn't realize they needed contrast too for that to show up. do you take muscle relaxers for your back? and does your leg muscles get super stiff as well?

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

I work on concrete all day, so by the middle of the day my entire back is super tight and back of legs are pulling and killing me. When I said groin pain, It was more like front of hip and little lower. Did your MRI say you had nerve damage or did a specialist see that. I have been told that the nerves look good. That what keeps my scratching my head. I am looking for another place to go in the KC area to get another opinion, but my funds are drained . lol Keep me posted and good luck

lovepainnot, I noticed that your MRI of the lumbar area was done without contrast. It's best to get that type of test done WITH contrast dye. Abnormalities just show up better under the contrast dye. Or, are you allergic to the dye? ....janiee

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

no surprisingly my nerves were fine for being so compressed for over a year now. do you ever go to a chiropractor? allot of time my pubic bone & sacrum are pulled out of place from my muscles being so tight all the time which is another reason muscle relaxers are so helpful for me.
you should look into bowen therapy too, I'm trying to find a place closer than boston(~2hrs) to me. its supposed to be really helpful with tissue issues(muscle, ligaments etc).

(janiee08)Not allergic to dye. Not sure why they didn't do that. I cant decide if I need to go see another orthopaedic doctor or just deal with the pain. Its getting old. Ha
I have tried chiropractors, muscle relaxers/spasm pills, anti-inflammatorys . Nothing works.

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

I had surgery for the very same things last year and on both hips. I'm still having issues from this. I'm still popping, clicking, grinding (sounds like a bad rap song, eh?). Anyway, a second opinion doc said that it looks like they got the spurs that were in there and she wasn't sure what else to tell me. Though, in the pre-op paperwork it did state that long term pain was a possibility. Anyway, had my left hip done in April 2010 and right hip in October 2010... Just sent and had steriod injection in left hip yesterday to see if that would help. To be honest with you, I felt like hell yesterday after the injection.. like it made the whole hip angry. The muscle spasms that are constantly in my rear were even worse than normal, the pain shooting down my leg had me cringing all day. This morning, I'm feeling better and the pain that is usually there when I climb out of bed in the morning has decreased quite a bit.

DO NOT, NOT, NOT rely on the arthrograms, with or without contrast. My imaging results were not at all what the surgeon found when he actually went in to do the surgery. I'm glad I pushed to have the surgery done, but even with it, I'm still living in pain for the time being.

I hope you can get some answers. I know how much fun it is dealing with this pain and walking like you're elderly when you're anything but!

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

I here ya, I feel like an old man. My hip still pops, crack and even screams!!! Since the Hip arthroscopy on my right hip, my left one has been bothering me. I dont have all the pain like I had in the right side. It just aches and is getting to be very tight. (2hipscopes)Did you ever feel like a knot that wont go away in the upper/middle part of your buttocks? Everything I have tried has not worked. If I roll around on a tennis ball in the pain full area, It feels like a knife is ripping through my butt cheek. No fun!!! It also make my leg go numb. Keep my posted on how your doing.

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

Yep, almost constantly have the knot feeling in my tush. I've been told it was piriformis syndrome and was shown some stretches to do for it. Sometimes it feels nice to do the stretching and other times it aggrivates everything in there. I can't win I'm not sure how accurate this is because I've been told different things by different doctors, but one of them said that the numbness could be because my sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle instead of under or over it and when that muscle gets mad (spasms) it puts pressure on the nerve and can cause that numbness down your leg.

Since the surgeries ice and heat are not my friends. Ice makes me ache and heat makes me throb, but I try them anyway. I start with ice when things just seem to be flaring and then switch to heat to stimulate blood flow to the area. Sometimes a nice hot bath feels good and sometimes I just make my husband rub and rub and rub until I'm sick of feeling it.

I have to tell you, too, that today I'm feeling even better than yesterday regarding the steroid shot. It's difficult for me to explain, but pain and such always has been hard to describe for me.. anyway, mechanically things feel better in there. it's like there was no oil in there for the parts to move freely and when they did the injection it just... helped. It was as if there was no room in there before and the bones were rubbing together all the time and now it seems as if there is some kind of cushion between the bones. Sorry for the lousy explanation but as I said, I'm not good at that. I'm actually looking forward to getting the right side done next week. It hasnt helped with the muscle spasms but I'm grateful for any kind of relief when there has been none in such a long time. Even consistent medication only takes it down a notch or two if I'm lucky.

Might I ask you, lovepainnot, if you seem to have more difficulty with moving or being still?

It's nice to be able to converse with someone feeling somewhat similar. I do hope you stick around and keep updating.

Re: Labral Tear repair not a success!!! HELP

(2hipscopes)I feel better when I am up moving around. When I sit for a long period of time, the pain starts. I have a 8 hr class every wed; which I sit the majority of the time. Wed nights I feel all stiff and cant move worth a crap. At work if I stand in one spot for an hour I get all stiff *** well. What kind of doc told you about the periformis syndrome. I went golfing yesterday and boy did that aggravate the tush pain. Where did they do your injection at? There is Nothing like not being able to be your age, Im 25 going on 55. HA
