I had my first EMG Tueday afternoon. Both legs - found it to be very painful, especially the needle in each foot. The shock part just felt like being snapped with a rubber band.
I had lumbar facet injections the week before and amazingly, back pain is better but so was my leg pain. Legs weren't really hurting much. I didn't think they were connected, but must be since pain was relieved with facet injections.
My question is that the doctor told me other than a few bruises, I should have no residual effects from the EMG. Two days later I'm still having pain and painful muscle spasms where the needles were placed. Is this normal or should I mention it to the doctor?
If you're still having pain by the time you read this, wouldnt hurt to call and tell them. I just had my first EMG too and it was more painful than I expected. I felt like I'd been, well, stuck with needles and zapped with electricity (LOL) for a few days also.
The piece of paper that I got with my "encounter" stated that you could have residual pain and bruising for 24-48 hours. The bruises that I got lasted longer than that...I asked my surgeon if he had ever has this done. he told me no....I said i could NOT wait until he had to endure this also! nasty thing.
Thanks for your responses. It's Sunday now and the muscle spasms and pain are pretty much gone. Never did have "bruises" but some discoloration on the top of my feet. Back still feels good.
I have had a few laughs about the procedure. I keep thinking of the scene from True Lies when Arnold Schwarzenegger (sp?) and Jamie Lee Curtis are captured and about to be tortured. My doctor walked in and asked me "Do you know what I'm going to do to you?" When I said "I have an idea," she said "And you came anyway?" She was nice and at least she was honest. I appreciated her honesty and that she didn't try to BS me and tell me it wouldn't hurt.
