What do you do when your percribed meds wont let you sleep?

Uggg...this sucks.
It is a constant battle to try and take my meds ( now on a 25mcg patch) in such a way to get some sleep.
Here in Canada, the industry is clamping down and now Dr's are very cautious when prescribing any narcs.

What do you do to sleep...this is torture.

I am lucky that I found a Dr. that has put me back on oxy's ( and now the patch) because my GP took EVERY patient of his off any type of narcotic...NO EXEMPTIONS!!!

Re: What do you do when your percribed meds wont let you sleep?

For some people narcotics/opiods cause an alertness effect as opposed to a drowsy effect. I know this because I am one of them. My Dr. prescribes Ambien or Klonopin so that i can sleep at night, otherwise I would literally just sit up all night due to my evening dose of morphine.

have you talked to your doc about RX'ing something for sleep?

Re: What do you do when your percribed meds wont let you sleep?

Guess my title was mis leading. What I meant was how do you sleep when your meds do not get rid of the pain and your dr will not up the dose.

I will take being up and no pain over being dead tired and in pain ANY DAY!!!!

You might want to talk to your doctor about a non-narcotic sleep aid. Are you on any medications other than oxy and patch? While narcotics are the most effective drugs for severe pain, there are a lot of other things that can help somewhat.

Have you tried any of the OTC Sleep Aids to help at night? If so, and those don't work, you probably need to talk to your doc about something to help you sleep.

I take a SUPER hot bath every night right before bed. I make the water so hot, I practically boil myself. It helps me.

Those are great, I do it at least 2 x a day, and if I'm awakened in the night due to pain, I take one then also.

Re: What do you do when your percribed meds wont let you sleep?

You cannot use a hot tub or a really hot bath on that pain patch. It will cause too much medication to be released from the patch at once and could cause a serious overdose. That said, if I were in your shoes, I would not push for more or higher doses of narcotics. This is a red flag and also a tough place to be in when you are still young, as it will only lead to astronomical doses down the road due to tolerance. Then you will be at the point of no one being willing to prescribe. You might consider some non-narcotic meds such as lyrica or cymbalta as an adjunct. These can be very effective. I combine lyrica w/percocet presently. I also do some relaxation and a body scan at night to help me get to sleep. I don't think that any pain medication gets rid of 100% of pain or even close to that. You just have to get to a place where it's tolerable or good enough. And for me, this has been a tough thing to accept. What I really want back is my old life. Best wishes. Lisa.

superdave, where is your pain located and how were you injured?
Oxycontin bothers sleep for some people but if you take oxycontin early in the morning it won't bother your sleep.

Re: What do you do when your percribed meds wont let you sleep?

I also have sevear sleep issues. muscle relaxers used to knock me out solid but after being on them for over a year and a half now they don't make me sleepy at all. I actually tried accupuncture last week which helped tremendously with loosing up my muscles and the nerve pain in my legs and surprisingly I went from getting 3-4 broken hours of sleep a night to a solid 6-7hrs of sleep! that lasted a good 4-5 nights, the Dr said I should come in twice a week but it was a $75 appointment(well worth it imo) but I just can't afford that, maybe next week I'll go in again. GL catching sum zzz's
