Topiramate for back pain management

I have been seeing a pain management specialist going on five months now. I have suffered from spondylothesis, and degenerative disc disease since 1996. I have been taking pain, sleeping meds, and muscle relaxants for 15 yrs now. This new dr has prescribed gabapentin (1500mg) to help w/sleep and pain. I have been on the gaba for 2 months now and don't feel any relief from that med alone. Last week he prescribed topiramate (100mg) which i haven't taken yet due to all of the serious side-effects. He insists that the primary benefit is weight loss and pain relief. I am 25 lbs overweight but is topiramate worth the harmful side-effects? Has anyone been on this drug? If so, please share how long you've been on it and what side-effects/benefits you have experienced. Which side-effects went away and how long did it take?

Re: Topiramate for back pain management

I have been on the three major nerve pain meds. Lyrica, Topomax and Neurontin. I gained weight on the lyrica-about 18 lbs. in three months, had vision issues. Topomax may be used a weight control med, but the slang for it is dopemax...and for a reason. I lost a lot of my memory with it...couldn't even remember the name of my oldest son. I am now on the Neurontin. I have been very pleased with the Neurontin and how it affects me....I would rather be on it than the others, but each person finds something that will work better for them than the others.

good luck!

Re: Topiramate for back pain management

I'm on this med for the pain of peripheral neurapathy in my toes due to scar tissue in my back pressing on my nerves. It helps a lot. I don't have the memory problems the other poster talked about. I don't have any noticable side effects at all. I take 200mg every day. The first time I tried it was a few years ago when it was brand name, and I lost about 20 pounds. This second time around using it, I'm on the generic, and I haven't lost or gained any weight on it. This time I've been on it for over a year. The first time, about two years. About the Gabapentin, aka Neurontin, my doctor told me the therapeutic dose can go as high as 3200mg a day. In other words, you may not find relief until you get to 3200mg, or near that dose range. The problems I had with both Gabapentin and Lyrica(tried that one too), is too much weight gain. When you have a bad back, that's the last thing you need! Hope this helps! Good Luck!!...janiee

Re: Topiramate for back pain management

Appreciate both of your ladies' experiences w/these meds. Another dr tried to push the lyrica on me over a year agao and i refused to take it. He said "it's approved by the fda!" it seems that fibromyalgia is diagnosed when they really don't know exactly what we have. Those commercials for lyrica actually scared me not to take it! All the women on lyrica look so tired and overweight. Love this board!!!

Re: Topiramate for back pain management

I've taken Topomax for 6 yrs now as a migraine preventative. I don't have the memory problems some do, but I have had grand mal seizures from it. Unfortunately for me the benefit far outweighs the risk. I did lose weight the first 5 weeks of Topomax, but then it levels off and you go back to normal. And some people don't lose any weight at all. So unfortunately it just comes down to whether or not you want to try it and see if it helps or not.

Take care,

Re: Topiramate for back pain management

I was on Topamax for its use in bipolar disorder. I dont generally have many problems with medications or side effects but this one i could not take. It made me "stupid". I couldnt talk right, couldnt get the words out and felt and sounded retarded. Im suprised that your doctor started you out on 100mg. Usually they will start you on 25 mg and titrate up. I'd say if you were going to try it, id ask my doctor if you could start slow , - like 25mg, that way you can see if you get side effects, even at the lower dose. Good luck!
