Question Jefferson fracture

Hi, I broke my neck (Jefferson fracture) in 2009 I am on medication for cramps in my neck and head. I feel very lucky I didn't lose use in my legs etc. For over a year Iv'e had pains and soreness in my shoulder and take pain relief when required. For the last several months I am getting pain in my forearm and fingers it comes on in waves and can last for minuets or hours it is so severe it makes me cry out, my doctor says it's nerve damage from my neck (to add to the mix Iv'e had Shingles 3 times) I can no longer read a newspaper or book as gripping anything causes a flare up. Although I have mild pain all the time it increases as the day goes on so therefor when I relax or go to bed it kicks in with vengeance so I dread going to bed. We have now exhausted all paths of medication and now I am being referred to a pain management clinic. My first question does anyone else have the same problem? if so what was your outcome? my other question is what can I expect from a pain clinic? your help and input would be appreciated

Re: Jefferson fracture

Welcome! No I don't have experience with what you are going through. However, I can comment on pain clinics. For most people they are a breath of fresh air after having the doctor run around and not making much progress. Not all of them are good though...some may only want to try you on injections, and some may start you on pain meds without doing much else in diagnosis or treatment.

They will likely review your medical records, discuss your symptoms/diagnosis/treatment, and do a mini physical exam. Often they may have more diagnostic ideas as well as a multi dimensional treatment approach. The pain clinic I'm going to has done more for me in a few months that other doctors had in years. I do hope you haven't exhausted all medication options. Actually, that is very unlikely. Many of the meds that can be helpful for nerve pain take months to properly trial. Also, not every doctor will think of every possible treatment. I hope your pain clinic appointment goes well. Best wishes.

Re: Jefferson fracture

Thank you Kate, Yes according to my doctor all combinations of pain relief have been exhausted but I live in hope.
