I am unable to take narcotics because of SOD pain. What do I do if I need surgery or have a serious pain? So far I have had reactions from all narcotics with the exception of morphine. Dr feel I could have a reaction to morphine as well. The abdominal pain I get after taking narcotics is horrendous to say the least. Anyone else have this problem and do you have any advice?
hi
what is sod/? no-i have not heard of anyone not able to a take a narcotic-if it were me i could nott live with the wicked pain i am left with due to accident
when i take mine i get relief .i wonder if it is just a coincidence you having pain and blaming it on then narcotic-maybe should consult a GIspecialist. you should let them scope your small bowel and stomach-see what the results show.
Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. You won't have heard of it because it is not that common. Narcotics cause a spasm of the ducts. It is more common in conditions where the gallbladder has been removed. I suffer from nerve pain and take a high dose of gabapentin. Just wondered if anyone on here had a similar experience.
I dont have SOD, But their are other routes of admin that avoid the stomach, Duragesic patches, Intrathecal meds, If you had surgery their isn't any great risk if you were to have the meds delivered epidurally and bipas the stomach and then send you home with transdermal fentany patches, Duragesic. There is almost always an alternative, it's just a matter of is the doc comfortable with the alternative.
Good luck, Dave
Unfortunately I have had the reaction from a pre-op injection and a intravenous drip. The reaction has nothing to do with the type of administration. They actually use morphine as a tester for this condition. I was able to tolerate a morphine pump during my last recovery from surgery. Sometimes I tolerate the narcotic ie codeine, dilaudin, perocet, tramadol for a few uses then it hits and I can't take it again. I took tramadol slow release for a week and was so happy that it lessened my pain. Then the familiar severe pain appeared and yet another drug that is of no use. Right now I am controlled with a high dosage of gabapenin for nerve pain but I fear if breakthrough pain becomes unbearable I will be left with few options.

Yes i know what sod pain is. I have adhesive arachnoiditis too. Vicodin was the first med that gave me sod pain. Went to ER. Shortly after gb removed. Had common bile duct cut. Still had sod pain. My gastro told me that sod pain is relieved by nitroglycerin. As are severe antrum of stomach spasms that feel just like sod pain. So, now i can take narcotic medicine for AA pain. I have to take a prescription strength antacid with the narcotic, like famotidine or omeprazole everyday. Then if i get sod pain, which is rare i take NTG. Btw: i posted my aa story today on "share your pain story" under"i was so blessed..." by gmak. Would you please look @ it & see if there are ideas that you would share with me? It would mean so much. I hope that you can tell your dr to try what my gastro did for me. With aa pain it was a godsend. Thank you for your time. God bless you.
Have you tried Methadone. Methadone is not like any other nacotic. I take 90mg/day for severe lumbar pain. There is no feeling that I have taken the drug like you would if it were aspirin.
Oh pooby gal i saw your hug to me. Thank you. I know with AA you understand just how much it would mean to me to get my dr back that treated me for 12 years! I have been through so much since changing drs. I think you remember me from " share your pain mamt story" title i was so blessed but didnt know it on pain mgmt site on 10/12/12, i think. I have appreciated your help thru learning about AA so much. Im praying that he willbtake me back as my pm dr. He decided to do rehab only & not see pain patients anymore. But,after hearing the new dr wanted to cut me with Aa to put Scs or pump inme he wanted to see me. Praying that he will take me back so i dont have to get surgery or suffer like i have since new pm dr! I know you understand and it means so much! Thank you for your prayers & caring. Hopefully, i will say i know im blessed again! Hope you are doing okay, i havent seen you on here lately. I hope that means your better, not the other. Thanks again pooby, gmak
