scared to ask PM Doc

I have been going to PM for about 2yrs now for possible RSD in my right foot. I've broken it 2x. I've. Gone thru all the scans & tests for RSD but the Doc told me I don't have it. I asked then what is causing me constant foot pain & I got no answers. Now she is taking me ooff of my pain meds! But I don't know how to tell her that I'm still in constant pain?! She has me keeping a pain journal but she never asks to see it. She says it more for me to see wheen my pain flares up. Well, it flares up when I'm on my feet. I'm astay at home mom, so, I'm always on my feet! On my appointments she nevr asks me anything. She just says here is your script & I'll see you next month. Well, now I'm being cut down to half month worth of meds & I'm out & miserable! I'm afraid to call the office to see if I can get another refill. I'm afraid that I will be labled as a pill popper! Any advice would be appreciated!

Last visit she gave me a script for half of my meds. I take it 2x a day as scripted. I had a script for 15 days worth & my 15 days were up 3 days ago.

Dear babybam, When she handed you your prescription the dr didnt say anything to explain, what did you say when you noticed it was only fifteen days? I have had that happen to me once in 24 years & the dr wanted to see me for epidural steroid injections 7 days later & thought that I would be so much better by 2 weeks later that my medicine could be reduced. Did she mention a procedure like this or some imaging, testing, injections? Also, can you call the pharmacy to call for a refill or do you have to get a triplicate from the dr? If I were you I would be more afraid to be in pain with no medicine than i would be from the dr. But, i certainly understand the terrible feeling of having to rely on the compassion, mercy of a dr to be able to function as i have been in chronic pain for 24 years, is this why you are frightened? Im sorry that you are afraid & i hope that you are ok.

Are you sure she didn't cut you back to one pill a day, so the script would still last the 30 days? If not, I'm thinking they're probably expecting your call. Good Luck

I agree with gmak.....if your doctor didnt explain the reduced dosage.......why didnt you say anything at that time?

Its much easier to ask, talk,or discuss a prescription issue at the time they are writing it.However it is a MUCH tougher issue after the fact IMO

Hi, I'm so sorry you are being treated this way. Seems like she would have done a nerve conduction study or something before now. When is your next appt? Has she mentioned any type of nerve pain meds like neurontin, lyrica or anything? What kind of pain are you having is it burning, tingling, aching, or what? Does she ask you these types of questions? She should.

If it were me I would be looking for another PM dr ASAP. I mean I'd continue to try to get additional meds from this dr. Because its going to take time to find another I think. I am in no way stating you should get meds from both though lol!

You could go back in there and calmly talk to her about trying some of those above meds. Also let her know that you were so taken aback by the reduction in pain meds you just didn't think to ask her why. Remember she works for you. Just remain calm be respectful. Don't mention finding another dr. Until you're sure that's what you're gonna do.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope the pain lets up some let us know what happens. Cathy

were you out of your meds the first time she cut you down to half??? I think thats what I understood. If you got cut down by that many, you need to call her back and ask her to taper you off of them instead of only giving you half of the script. It sounds like shes going to take oyu off of them since she cant find any "proof1' that you have pain... I would find a new doctor. in the meantime you do need to call her and let her know that the amount she gave you wasnt enough and that you dont want to go into withdrawls... Best of luck sweetie!

Re: scared to ask PM Doc

Who told you that you may have RSD? RSD is easily diagnosed so it should not have taken two years for the diagnosis or ruling it out to have been done. What testing has been done-imaging, nerve testing, etc? There are several tests that can be done to either confirm or dismiss RSD as the cause of your pain. Are you seeing a pain management doctor who is familiar with RSD or are you seeing your GP and having them treat your pain? If you are seeing your local doctor, then that is certainly not the best choice and it might be much more beneficial on your part to find your way to a board certified RSD pain management doctor in your nearest big city.
As far as the reduction in meds goes, it does indeed sound like she is tapering you off the meds, but I would certainly either make an appointment to discuss it with her, and find out what her plan is for determining what is causing the pain you are having and what she plans to offer for the pain if reducing or stopping pain medication is a part of her current plan.
Have you done any physical therapy for your foot/ankle? That is essential in the treatment of CRPS/RSD.

Re: scared to ask PM Doc

I think it would be a good idea to get a second opinion, and work with another PM specialist. Something is going on that you're having such pain, and you want to get to the bottom of it. When you do get the second opinion, be sure to explain that you're not just seeking drugs; you want to find a resolution, and if none can be found, you want help managing the pain. I think sometimes we can become so afraid of not getting help that we actually "feel more pain." I'm not saying it's true in your case, but our body reacts to our fear. See what the second doctor says and go from there. Keep us posted.

Re: scared to ask PM Doc

I agree with Dave! A second opinion is necessary! And maybe some new tests? RSD can be difficult to diagnose! Also, agree with the fact that pain can become worse with anxiety! The fear of not getting treatment, the fear of having nothing to treat the pain with, even the fear of not knowing for sure what is wrong can make things worse! Just done wait sweetie. Go ahead and find someone to get a second opion thru, and call her back immediately and tell her what you are planning to do... Again, best of luck!! Feel better! :)
