Meds for Anxiety

Are there any meds for anxiety that you don't have to take daily, but you can take if you feel an attack coming on? I really hate medicine and would rather find something that I can just take when I need it, not daily. Something to take that won't make me a zombie or knock me out. I'm going to the dr Monday, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had suggestions.

Thanks,
Annie

Dear AnnieGis,
I'm not really in to the practice of this but many are. The only two things that will knock it out right now is xanax or valium. Xanax is the strongest. You only need to take a very small amount since you are apparently not having severe attacks and you think that you do not need a continious medicaiton. If you get xanax which you might have to find a Doctor that will give this to you, get 0.25mg tablets and split one first to see if that is enough when an attack starts coming. Be aware that even this amount can hit you pretty good and it takes awhile to keep your composure and adapt to the sudden relaxation of the medication. After a while it will still hit you but you will adapt to the feeling and feel better and ignore it. If that is not enough take the 0.25mg. If you have to go beyond that then I would suggest that you consider that your condition may warrant more then just as needed. Always keep your Doctor informed on what you are doing and I hope that you have had tests to rule out minor physical diosorders that can be causing this, just not accepting panic attacks. Be careful and don't abuse xanax or any benzo, it is not candy and can put you in danger while driving and such, especially if you have not taken a benzo before. Be safe and I hope you can lick this. By the way I have taken a high dosage of this 4 times a day for years, so I am not giving advice on something that I haven't taken. Should have told you that in the first place, sorry.

Sincerely,

Sickman

Re: Meds for Anxiety

if you can t get any valium type meds, any old fashioned antihistamine meds usually help by sedating you

beta blocker blood pressure tablets also reduce the physical problems caused by anxiety, blushing, sweating, racing heart

Re: Meds for Anxiety

Annie,

Hi, like sickman and hry said, benzo's such as Valium or Xanax are fast acting meds which you can take on an as needed basis. I take Valium when I feel very anxious or feel a panic attack coming on. I take a relativly low dose, so that it calms my anxiety without knocking me out.

Re: Meds for Anxiety

Thanks for the advice. Does the low dosage of valium make you feel strange at all?
