Why do I freak out in meetings?

Nobody would know this and its almost like my dirty little secret but in meetings at work I become quiet and withdrawn as I dont feel confident about speaking out. In general at work I joke around and get along great with everyone. However I fear the typical 'Lets all introduce ourselves' line in meetings. I find the anticipation of what I will say a crippling experience. Its been obvious on one or two occasions and thankfully meetings dont require too much from me but at the same time its really holding back my career. Does this make sense to anyone? I am excellent in interviews, meeting new people and socializing. Im just really bad in meeting rooms and I cant even keep a level head to think straight. My voice gets croaky and almost doesnt work and my heart instantly triples in speed. how can I fix this

Re: Why do I freak out in meetings?

Speaking in meetings or to a large body of people is a very common fear. I still have this problem even though I have known everyone in my meetings for years. My main problem now is that I fear I might panic and I can't run away. One of my worst classes (but a great benefit) in college was public speaking. I was very nervous all the time. I have friends that take Xanax anytime they know they will have to speak in front of a lot of people. Like I said, it's a very common fear.
