Ok, has anyone tried the program "Driving Fear Program" by Rich Presta?
I have tried CBT, medication, mind over matter, etc. etc. and nothing is working. I always have to turn my car around and come back, I try to pull over and get my self together but it does not work for me. I totally lose it!
Any other advice?
Where did you try CBT? A competent psychologist should be able to help you knock this phobia out. The typical chain of events is learn relaxation/breathing techniques and then do some in-session visualization of driving, then go out in the real world and drive.
Well, I guess I have not found the right therepist. I have seen 2! Maybe it is just me? I like the idea of in-session visualization, no one has even mentioned that to me! But then, I am in Arkansas! ha! I do like your straight forwardness!
Thanks
Anita

No, it's not you. Within clinical psychology there are many different approaches to treating patients. Generally speaking it is easy to find a CBT therapist. However, if you are in a rural area it may not be so easy.
What was I describing with the in-session visualizations is part of a "desensitization" program that is custom made for you. After you learn how to properly relax, you and your therapist build a hierarchy. At the bottom is something driving related that makes you minorly uncomfortable (such as thinking about driving), at the top of the hierarchy is the actual act of you driving. In between are steps, and you approach each step in a safe and controlled environment, and use your relaxation at each step. Over time you make it up the ladder to finally driving.
Hi there. I have suffered for years from Driving Fear and it comes back now and then. I have done CBT, hypnosis and some self study stuff which really really helped. Eventually I think it was down to stress which was causing it.
Good luck
