Question Has anyone here gone through a pregnancy with major panic attacks??

I am now in the process of duing an IVF cycle this month but just about 2 hours ago I had a really bad break through panic attack where I was shaking and my heart rate was threw the roof at atleast 180. It lasted about 10-15 minutes it felt like forever and I thought I was going to die I am very upset because I had stopped my toprol and klonopin for almost 2 weeks and I was so happy I thought I was making progess so this was not only scary but very upsetting and disappointing to me. I don't know what I should do. I will feel like such a failure if I have to stop the whole process now. Help please what can I do? What doctor should I see regarding this? I had to pop 3 klonopin 6mg and 25 mg toprol. I thought I was doing so well off them and was so proud. Now I am just sick to my stomach. I am afaird I will have to stop the IVF because I cannot take these meds during pregnancy. What do i do? Has anybody here had a similar experiance?? Are there medications I can take that are safe? I know klonopin is a no no. I have to do something now before it is to late. They put me on zoloft a couple of months ago but I don't even know if that is safe during pregnancy. PLease if you have any experiances like this please share I need all the help I can get.

Thank you very much

Re: Has anyone here gone through a pregnancy with major panic attacks??

Hi, I'm new here but so far the stories I'm hearing are pretty familiar. My daughter who was on zoloft when she became pregnant, went off of it but suffered from such panic attacks. She miscarried, which had nothing to do with her panic but then feared getting pregnant again because of going through that same panic. But the doctor told her that if she were to get pregnant they would keep her on her zoloft. I don't know if it would be on the same dosage.
Is your doctor aware of your panic? Maybe he could prescribe something that would not be harmful to the baby.
I'm also wondering if there may be something organic that would help.I just read a post on this board about concentrating on your breathing when an attach is about to happen. Has that worked for you?
All the best.

Re: Has anyone here gone through a pregnancy with major panic attacks??

When I was pregnant with my third daughter, I had severe panic disorder. Well, I have always had panic attacks but at that time they were the worst. That was in 1996 and I was told I could not take any medications. I had been taking high doses of clonazepam at the time, for about three years by then and the pregnancy was planned so I was weaned off it by my doctor. It was kind of rough, but not as bad as I thought it would be. When I got pregnant again in 1997 though, I was scared to stop taking my meds and took Prozac for the anxiety. It got me through the pregnancy without many panic attacks but now, from what I am told, Prozac is a big no no for pregnancy. There are few meds that can be taken for panic disorder while pregnant.

You definitely need to see a doctor to find out what you can take. I went to my OB/GYN and he called somewhere in Toronto for me (I live in Ontario) that gave him the information. Some ask their psychiatrist when they need information about their meds and pregnancy/breastfeeding, etc. I would probably talk to an obstetrician first and go from there, as he or she would be the most knowledgable when it comes to pregnancy and medication.
