These are some neat facts I learned in CPR class. Adults don't just stop breathing. Breathing only stops when there is a problem with the heart and oxygen is no longer being pumped from the lungs to the rest of the body. Your heart is fine, so you can relax and know that your lungs are also fine.
Also, in the event that the chest muscles 'seize up' and make it hard to breath (as in a panic attack), relaxing will get them working again. If you are unable to relax, don't worry about it. The body's first response to lack of oxygen is to pass out. When you pass out, your body relaxes on its own and you start breathing again. It's like a safety mechanism.
Don't worry too much (I know, easier said than done!). If it starts getting hard to breath, pull over and relax a little. The worst that will happen is you will pass out for a couple of minutes and start breathing again. So what if you make your trip a block or two at a time? You WILL NOT stop breathing, soffocate, or die!
