Post Psychologist and Psychiatrist

Long post and then a question at the end.

Like I've said so many times in the past, I've been dealing with panic disoder and OCD for almost 20 years.
When I think back I've probably been this way for even longer than that.
A few years ago I thought I'd give a Psychologist a try.
I left there feeling like I was crazy, like everything that was wrong with me was my fault or the fault of my Parents.
When he asked me what medication I took and I told him he said "Is that all?".
He told me my dose should be three times higher.
Why should I take more, if what I'm taking is controlling the panic?
He told me "You should be taking (name your drug) for the panic and (name your drug) for the OCD.
Then he said "are you ever really happy and then you feel really sad?"
I said yes, thinking to myself, "Well who doesn't".
Then he told me because of that I was "Slightly Bi-Polar".
I didn't think you could be "Slightly Bi-Polar", I'd think you either are or your not.
Then he told me what drug he thought I should be on for that.
Before I left he told me he'd send a copy of his findings to my Doctor and recommend I get on these three other drugs.

When I did go back to my Doctor, he looked at me and asked if I wanted to take all these drugs, I said no.
He laughed and said he didn't think I would.
He felt like me, if what I was taking was working, why would I want to up the dosage plus add three other drugs.
I asked him about the "Slightly Bi-Polar" thing and he just laughed and said if the fact that you get sad every once in awhile makes a person Bi-Polar, then the whole world is Bi-Polar.

About three weeks ago my Doctor asked me if I'd like him to make me an appointment to "Talk' to a Psychiatrist, I said sure.
He called and made the appointment.
This morning I finally got a call from the Psychiatrist's office to tell me when the appointment was.
The first thing out of the receptions mouth was.
"The Doctor well want you to get on an SSRI".
I said no thanks, I tried Zoloft and Paxil in the past and they freaked me out so bad that it was all I could do to keep myself from jumping out a window and then after three days on them (not at the same time) I had an allergic reaction to them.
She told me that there were other SSRI's out there and he'd try me on those.
I told her no, I don't want to change the drugs I take, what I take works just fine and all I wanted to do was talk.
She said "Well he wants the people he sees on SSRI's".
I told her I made a mistake and I didn't think I wanted the appointment after all.
She said "You know SSRI's are the ONLY thing that really works."
I told her no, I didn't believe that at all becasue they didn't work for me.
Then I said, "Gee, what I take costs $6.50 for thirty pills, the Zoloft and Paxil were almost $50.00 for 15 pills, could that be the reason he likes SSRI's so much, maybe he gets some money back from the drug companies."
I think I offened her, she hung up on me!!!!

Now the question, is that all Psychologist's and Psychiatrist's want to do?...get you on more drugs or a higher dosage of the drug you already take??

Unfortunatelly, it seems that way.

Personally, I think you'd have much better luck going to a naturopath. They are there to not only help you thorugh natural remedies, but to listen to you as well.

Thanks for answering.
But that's just it, I don't want a bunch of herbs either.
All I want is someone to talk to.
My GP does listen to me and he's a wonderful and understanding Man, but he has other people to see and I feel selfish when I go in there and take up all of his time.
He's never said that to me, it's just how I feel.
Oh well, my pills do help me and I do have a self help group that I go to and it does help so much to talk to other people who are going through the same thing, I guess I'll just stick with that.

to gracicat, sometimes a higher dose of a persons drugs does help a lot more
SSRI's are only 1 type of antidepressant, there are many others and if they work for you, have basicly the same result.

some do have very severe reactions to a new antidepressant< I did to one.
valium type meds are reliable and work for everyone with no severe side effects

often generic or older antidepressants are much cheaper and probably work as well, imipramine, for example
as you have found , psychologists and psychiatrists usually rely a lot on meds nowdays, most of them have never had a panic attack or been disabled by anxiety.....

I know what you mean about Dr's who want everyone to be on some sort of med. I'm on Effexor. I only take 112.50 which helps me and the I was told it would be easier to taper from a small dosage. Next time I had an appt mt Dr, wanted to up my doage to 150 mg I flat out told him no, I was planning on having a bay in year and my OBGYN said he wanted me off effexor for I became pregant to it would be dumb for me to up the dosage besides I felt better and good. My Psychiatrist agreed and decided that I should stay on my current doage. Good thing he agreed or he would've had one less patient!
