"Staying With the Symptoms"
As I mentioned I suffered very badly with panic attacks on a daily basis for an entire year.
But I was able to overcome them from learning distracting techniques, learning about how this disorder operates, and most importantly, I "stayed with the symptoms" NO MATTER HOW BAD I FELT.
This is one of the most important things to do to overcome panic attacks, and I will be honest - IT IS THE MOST HARDEST, but it is the only way you can prove to yourself that you are not going to die NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU FEEL. By doing this over and over, you will begin to think "I have took my heart to the highest level it can go and I have not passed out in the past, I won't now". I will also be even more honest with you - it may take you confronting your attacks AND STAYING WITH IT - NOT RUNNING FROM IT - maybe even months - perhaps even a year or more to prove to yourself you are not going to die or pass out from your symptoms.
As I mentioned before, this is not a 'namby pamby" type of illness to get out of! There were many times I went out with friends and felt like I was "almost hanging onto my not passing out by a thread". I felt almost unable to stand up many times. I went to work even though I panicked everyday. I went out driving even though I panicked. BUT I STAYED WITH IT because I knew it was the only way out of this illness. Eventually, the panic attacks sort of "wore off", they became less and less and eventually they went away entirely, but again, it takes a lot of work and courage on your part to do this.
Try and stay with it and not run from them. I know it is very very hard, but again, it is the only way out. |
