Medication to stop nerves etc... - Panic Disorders Message Board

Thanks everyone for your info.

So can my doctor give me anything to stop the problems I am having, it seems to get worse, especially at work. The work I am doing, I have to greet clients and make drinks, this seems to make my heart race and I get the shakes etc… I really want this to stop as it is making life sooo difficult!

What sort of medications are there, and do they work straight away, do you have to keep taking the medication all your life or can it cure the problems..

Slim,

Your doctor can prescribe meds like ativan, valium, or xanax. These are not cures. They will help with panic symptoms. You may need to see a therapist to truly help with panic attacks.

Many thanks for your reply Doug, I just want the nerves to calm down, I have an ECG/Heart Recording this afternoon and if this comes out all normal I dont want my doctor to brush it off, I want something done once and for all! He seems to not want to care, considering changing doctors!

I think it is a good thing that you just keep on working and not quit your job because of your symptoms.

There are many things you can do for your anxiety:
Get to a psychiatrist for medication. They can put you on any number of different meds. Go to any anxiety support group meetings in your area. Start therapy. Read this Board. My threads (especially "distracting techniques" are really good to read). Do not retreat from any of your daily activities because of panic attacks (this actually makes it worse). Read books on the disorder. That's what I can come up with right now.

Antidepressents also will work for your anxiety. They take about 2 weeks to start making a difference. Good luck on your tests.
