Exclamation Pretty Bad Panic Disorder (on Subway)

Hi, I live in NYC-and have lived here for the past two years. I commute to and from work each day by way of subway. While on the subway, I always get extreme panic attacks, mostly because I am scared of terrorists doing something to the train. The worst is when the train stops, full to capacity with people, and the train just stops. No announcements, nothing. My heart sinks and I break out in a cold sweat. Is there anything I can do? This is seriously the most stressful point in my day.

i probably would feel the same way,considering what happened, the only advice i can give you is to do what i would do ,and that is .......when you start to feeling scared start talking to yourself calmly, tell yourself that it's ok to feel this way considering what happened,but it's just anxiety and that you need to relax, take deep breaths and try to relax tell yourself the truth don't go to extremes, the train stopped ,not the end of the world, try to stay in the moment and talk yourself out of being scared.don't go to extremes thinking theirs a terrist attack, it's just the train stopping it's no big deal, your strong for doing it and not avoiding it, you can do this. sounds like your more in control than you think, you can do it. i'll pray for you!!!!!

thanx-that was an awesome reply! i mean, I love my job-but lately I've been thinkin about just moving somewhere else-so I don't even have to deal with this commute anymore

train travel is often difficult for anxiety sufferers due to having no control over the train, and being jammed in with strangers

deep slow breathing, tensing and relaxing the muscles, listening to music thru a sony walkman and other distraction methods all help
