looking for pediatricians

I am going on 18 weeks right now and plan on looking into pediatricians soon. Since this is my first baby, is there anything specific I should be looking for and asking when interviewing the doctors?
Just trying to plan ahead....

thank you!

Re: looking for pediatricians

Hi Rose! I had to find a new pediatrician for my 4th child recently! We used another for along time but what worked for 3 older kids didn't work for my youngest.
I hadn't lived in this area very long so basically I just asked as many parents as I could find who their pediatrician was and how they liked him. I interviewed 3 different offices before I got to the one I use now. With the first office I spoke to, I didn't like the way the receptionist was rude and abrupt so I knew I didn't want to deal with that office. For the second office, the people were really nice but you had to schedule appointments too far in advance. I figured that if they were that busy then the docs might not spend as much time with us as we might need. I hate going into a doctors office and having to wait 30 minutes to be seen then rushed out as soon as I actually got in! Strike 2! At the 3rd and last office, I was able to get in just to talk to the doctor (some practices won't allow this) within a couple of days. The doctor was very enthusiastic about seeing my son and trying to help him and was enthusiastic about working with other specialists involved in my son's care. He feels the same way I do about issues important to me, like pain control, medicating if necesary or Not medicating if not necesary. He spent as much time as I needed to get my questions answered without making me feel rushed.
In your case, is the doctor willing to discuss important issues with you, like breast feeding versus bottle feeding? Does he support your views or does he suggest you ask someone else those questions?
If I were you I would make a list of questions you would like answered, and then judge his responses. Trust your gut instinct to help you decide if he will be the right doctor for you and your child. Does his staff make you feel comfortable there, do you feel comfortable with him? You will be relying on your gut instincts alot! once your baby is born so may as well start practicing with them now!
Nowhere is it written that if after you have your baby you decide you don't like him afterall you can't look for another doctor!
I hope I've answered your question! Congrats to you and your family!

Re: looking for pediatricians

Hi! Well I think the last poster pretty much covered everything. One thing that I find important was whether or not you could get in touch with either a nurse or the Dr. himself/herself during the night or weekends if it were an emergency. I love my son's pediatrician now except I can't get in touch with his office during the weekends....I have to call a different office. Good luck
