Fun and easy homemade toy ideas

I've noticed that everyone spends tons of money buying "developmental" toys for my 8 month old, but he'd rather play with stuff out of my kitchen and stuff. He was fascinated by the vitamin bottle the other day, so I took an empty child proof pill bottle and put pennies in it (he only plays with it supervised.) and he will shake and throw that thing and squeal... he doesn't have that much fun with any of his store bought toys. He barely even pays attention to them anymore.

I've noticed he tires of toys very quickly and it always interested in things unlike things he's seen before. So, does anyone have any ideas or things you've used with your kids to keep them entertained?

Yep, winnie, austin too loves pots and spoons from the kitchen. He will sit in his travelin tot and play for a while with them. Gives me a headache but I'll live! The other day...he found the broom and he sat there and played with the handle for at least 25 mins. I too, spent a lot of money on the educational toys only to find he has no interest in them. He prefers the broom..go figure.
