Peanut butter?

I was just wondering when toodlers could eat peanut butter? I read somewhere that kids under 2 should not eat it cause that is a big reason why they are allergic to peanuts later in life. And daycares around here all say peanut free. I haven't given her any yet because I've heard bad things. Is all this true or is it just hype?

Thanks from a first time mother.

Re: Peanut butter?

My Dr advised me to keep my DD away from peanut butter untill she was 3, because we have a lot of peanut allergies in our family. I've never heard of all toddlers being kept away from peanut butter. Everyone I know gives it to there 2 y/o's. You should ask you Dr if your worried.HTH

Re: Peanut butter?

If there are NO nut allergies in your family you can start after she turns 2 and see if any reactions occur, if she has no reaction then continue. If there ARE allergies to nuts in the family wait until she is 3. I have nut allergies so won't be giving my daughter any until then. The same goes for any other high allergy foods, such as shelled seafood, I have allergies to that as well so we are holding off for another year. As much as I can't wait to let her have a peanut butter and jam sandwich I know this is the best thing for her...and really, she doesn't even know she is even missing out.

Re: Peanut butter?

I too was told not to give my kids peanutbutter until they were at least 2. Of friend of mine dealt with it this way: She brought her daughter and a jar of peanut butter to the doctors and she tried it in front of the doctor just in case there was a severe allergic reaction, the doc would be right there. I did wait until all of my kids were at least 2 until they had peanut butter and then we did it when my husband was home (he is a paramedic). That way if anything happened he could treat it immediately. If there is going to be a severe reaction, it will happen quickly. Trying any new food with young children is scary. You just never know what they could react to. My son drank milk until he was 2 and then started vomiting from it and breaking out in hives. The same thing with antibiotics. Two of my sons are allergic to pennicillan. (spelling?) Found out through trial and error.
