why wont my son talk?

Hello I have a son that 2 1/2 he wont talk I mean at all. about 6 months ago he use to say things like bubba, momma, dada, baby then It stoped totally. He says nothing.
Should I be worried? We try to get him to tell us what he wants ect but he wont. He will take your hand and lead you to what he wants instead. He has an older and a younger brother so I thought that would help him talk make him want to talk but nope. He doesnt seem to be behind on anything else. Hes a very happy child with no other problems.
Should I take him to a doctor?

Re: why wont my son talk?

Definitely take him to the doctor. It's better to be over-concerned than miss something big.

If there is a problem, your State's Early Intervention program could possibly help give him help and it is free. They should be online or your Pediatrician's office will give you info.

He might have Autism if he don't talk. So you should take him to a doctor.

Re: why wont my son talk?

i doubt it is autism, she would have noticed the other signs of that.

my daughter is 14 months and is not talking.....other than sounds like ma, da, ba, de
no actual words, and they said she should be saying about 2 right now.....nope

here are a few things that cause speach delay...
sippy cups, anything your child has to suck through
also a baby bottle
pacifyers

they say it is best to remove the valve from the sippy cup for your child to drink.

my daughter wont drink out of one without a valve...
and she loves her pacifyer....i try to only let her have it at naps, bed time and in the car.....

i was just talking to a lady who is in child development and she said if they arent talking by 2 they may need speech therpy.

one child she said was 2 1/2 and would just take you to what he wanted, never would say it.....so she said he now is in therpy for it.

definatly time for the dr. in my opinon, i am taking my daughter in a few days.

Re: why wont my son talk?

I knew someone who had a boy that didn't talk. The doctor said that it was because is older brother was doing all the talking for him (first son very intelligent). To encourage him to talk he told her to make him play with younger children. It did work.

If you have any concerns talk to your doctor to exclude any physical or neurological problems.

Re: why wont my son talk?

i dont think u have too much to worry about at all! my son didnt talk until he was almost 4!! he had an older sister that did it all for him and thats common but if you dont have any other kids it happens too. my son would just grunt and point and not do much at all but we did take him to the doctor and he said dont worry about it. now my son is a 10 yr old straight a student! we thought maybe he was slow but now we see he just didnt have much to say! i wouldnt stress at all but do a follow up with your doctor.

Re: why wont my son talk?

My daughter will be two in March. She says things like mama, dadda, drink, and baby (her doll)....oh and "NO" is big one. Other than that she also grunts to get a snack or movie. But my niece was almost 3 when just out of blue started speaking sentences. I think that there are kids that just sit back for a while and make talking a "spectator sport", then they decide they want a try at it. I would consider a Dr, but don't freak out about it.

Re: why wont my son talk?

Hello well ive tekn my son to the doctor and he has an ear infection at the moment after that on dec.30 he goes to an ear specialist to see if he sees any problems. I dont think they will becouse hes been there before and it all was fine. The doctor said after that we will go to another step to see what the problem could be.
The doc does think theres a problem not becouse hes not talked in general becouse she said he could be slower. But since he did talk a long time ago and stoped all of a sudden that means theres some kind of a problem. So I will wait til dec 30 and go from there. I will keep posted as we go.
