Potty trained, but anal retentive

My DS is 3 yrs old and is potty trained during the day. During naps and at night I put a diaper on him in case. This has been going on for 2 months, since he was potty trained. The last month or so, he has not had a BM during the waking hours. He holds it until he sleeps and then does in his diaper. Every night before I go to bed I check up on him and I need to change it.

He has gone during the days only a handful of times. His bm's are not very soft or hard (sorry if TMI). I think with him holding his BM's it's making it harder.

How do I get him out of this habit? Sometimes during his naps he's dry (of urine), so I'm trying to take his diaper away for naps. Do I let him poop in his pj's and then clean up-so he learns? Or are there other options?

Re: Potty trained, but anal retentive

Once you can rule out a digestive problem related to his BMs, I think that you should probably spend your energy trying to encourage him to have his BM's throughout the day. Set aside 10-20 min. several times a day and tell him it's "poopie time" or (whatever you call his BMs). Sit him on the toilet, give him a cute book to look at, and tell him it's time for the poop to come out. Make a game out of it if you can. I am also wondering if it would be possible to get him up once during the night to sit on the toilet to see if he'll go. Yes, this is all easier said than done. If you do not mind cleaning up a bit of a mess, it might be helpful to let him have a BM in his underwear at night to help him understand why "big boys" go on the toilet instead of in their underwear. I'm thinking that the more you put the diapers on him at night, the more it's reinforcing that it's okay for him to poop in them at that time. He is probably associating the diapers with it being a good time to have a BM.
