Question for anyone who's children are on Zyrtec and/or Singulair

My 4 year old son was prescribed Zyrtec and Singulair for allergies. Since he has been taking them his behavior at Preschool/daycare has changed for the worse. He is constantly getting in trouble for hitting, kicking, breaking toys, running, anything and everything a 4 year old can think of. I have been blaming this on his medicine (he's been on it for about 6 months). I haven't been giving it too him regularly, but everytime I quit for a few days he starts to get sick. Has anyone else seen a change in their children's behavior when on this medicine?

He has also been eating from the time he gets home until he goes to bed. He's a very active child and keeps gaining weight.

I don't know if this is a phase he's going through or if it is the medicine, but I don't want to keep him on the medicine if it is causing him to be bad at school.

Any opinions or advice is appreciated.

Re: Question for anyone who's children are on Zyrtec and/or Singulair

Have you mentioned this to his prescribing physcian? My son takes singulair for allergies/asthma and I haven't heard any bad reports from school he's the same age as your son and just started pre-k in a new school all kinds of new things going on to act up over but nothing. The weight gain thing would concern me I ask his pediatrician to do blood tests.

PS zyrtec didn't help my son's allergies at all.

Re: Question for anyone who's children are on Zyrtec and/or Singulair

Thanks for you input, I've been thinking about calling the Doctor, but I was hoping he would calm down after being on it for awhile. Unfortunately when he was on just one of the medications he still got sick. He was tested for allergies and came back allergic to dust and mold, but he wasn't very high on the scale (2 & 3 out of 6). Both his pediatrician and the allergy Doctor said to keep him on both medications.

I think I will call the doctor tomorrow. Thanks again.

Re: Question for anyone who's children are on Zyrtec and/or Singulair

Zyrtec can make children quite sleepy (which in young children often leads to poor behavior). What time of day are you giving it? If you're giving it in the morning, you might try giving it at bedtime - while carefully monitoring his allergies and his behavior.

If that change makes his behavior better but his allergies worse, then I would insist on trying a non-sedating antihistamine.

Zyrtec actually worked well for my son even when I gave it at bedtime.
