is this normal? My 21 month old all of the sudden will not take a nap. He has always been great at taking naps. He is in a big boy room but he has always messed around in there for a little while and then layed down and took a nap. The last few days he has played in his room for ever and never went to sleep. What age is normal for kids to stop taking naps? He is totally sleepy.
I was just about to write about my 20 months old dd! Like your son, she has stopped napping about 1 week ago and I am at a loss for what to do. The only time she will fall asleep is when I am running errands and she naps in the stroller. With the extreme cold we are currently facing I have not gone out.
The only thing I can think of is that they might both be teething now.
I am hoping this is not the end of her nap because I probably need it more than her
I hear ya. He did sleep today. I am the one that needs it more than him. I am currently on treatments similiar to kemo and really need my nap during the day. We will see what tomorrow brings. I am suprised that no one has responded. Lets hope for some suggestions.
I can feel your pain! I have a 3 year old and 23 month old. My 3 year old does not nap anymore. I have had to fix this by moving up his bedtime to 6pm. It took awhile to get him to bed an hour earlier, but after a week of the same routine, it finally worked. He's now getting a bit more sleep. My youngest will usually fall asleep around lunchtime for his nap. He is starting to dislike napping, so I (since he is so tiny) still feed him his lunch in a highchair. This way he ALWAYS falls asleep after eating his lunch in his chair. Just find anything that works!!!
Certainly, there are some 21 month olds who no longer need naps, but the majority at that age do still need to take a nap. They may resist it, but that doesn't mean that they don't need it.
Regardless of whether he needs it or not, if he plays quietly during that time, I'd say leave him and go take a nap yourself! Whether or not he sleeps, the quiet time is good for both of you.
I just had to change up our nap rituals. He is back to his normal naps now. I let him watch a movie to get tired and then put him in his dark room to sleep. He passes right out now. I also had to block off his toys when he naps so he can't stay up and play. But usually I get him tired enough that he just goes in there and goes to sleep. He has pooped a ton of times today and his poor little butt is raw. It hurts him if I wipe it. I have to get the poop off though. I gave him two baths so I did not have to wipe it.
