| | 7 Yr old possible depression (long)
My 7 year old son has had some behavior changes that have been going on for over 6 months now. When the least little thing goes wrong or he doesn't get exactly what he wants, he bursts into tears. This doesn't appear to be attention getting or manipulative behavior. He seems genuinely crushed. At first we thought this might be an age-related growth spurt, but it's been going on for too long. We also thought this was only at home until his teacher called concerned that he was driving himself too hard and crying at school. He's always been a wonderful student and is quite smart. The teacher and I discussed that he might have reached a point where in his education where he actually has to stop and think about how to get the answer to a question rather than already knowing it - that perhaps he didn't know how to handle a situation where he doesn't already know the answer. But beyond this his trouble is outside of school as well. At baseball he is fine if he makes a good play, but he's in tears and the game is ruined for him if he makes a mistake. We've showed him that it's okay to make mistakes - that even major league players make mistakes - but this hasn't made a difference. we've started discussions with the pediatrician who wants to do some tests and has metioned medication for depression. I really want to help my son, but I'm not thrilled with the idea of doping up my usually sparky boy with drugs if there is another way to handle this. Thoughts please.
