Overprotective Dad - Parenting Issues Message Board

I'm not a parent but I would like a parents point of view on this. Okay long story short, My dad has always been slightly overprotective. The other day we were at the shops and a guy from school said hello to me. Suddenly i am a 'no good ****' among other things. My mum is cool though and she told my dad he was making a big deal about nothing but he is still mad.

How do I make peace with him and still have a social life?

It seems your dad has some major issues. If I were you, I'd team up with mom and face him on this. You have a right to have friends, no matter how young, or old, you are. How could he call you that?! I can't imagine how hurt you must feel! Maybe there is something really bothering him in his life, and he's taking it out on you.

Even if the guy from school said "hello" to you in a way that undressed you with his voice and eyes, your father's demeaning words to you were abusive and way out of line. He needs counseling. Your father is not overly protective, he is overly controling and abusive. If he treats your mother in any way close to this, or demeans her in other ways, this is a form of domestic violence that does as much harm as if he were to throw you or her up against a wall. For your mother to not say anything leads me to believe that she has been "conditioned" by him for so long that she no longer realizes his abuse. Usually a man like this will also "condition" his daughter to believe his irrational and abusive words about her are true.
Please seek the advice of a domestic violence specialist. She will be able to give you a clearer view.
