Of my four kids, my oldest never really crawled until after she walked, kid #2 crawled at about 8 months, kid #3 crawled after she walked (10 months), and kid #4 is now 10 months old...he comando crawled at 7 months , but just started crawling good the right way a couple weeks ago. The "basic" information given by your doctors office and magazines are just a guideline. Each kid will do things in their own time. As long as your baby isn't showing any signs that it hurts to try to crawl, just give him time.
My oldest child started talking well by a year old, her brother wouldn't say anymore than he needed to until he was almost 3, he could talk he just wouldn't.
Austin is probably just trying to let you know he's got a mind of his own, and isn't going to follow any rules. Probably a sign of things to come...look out...and have fun with your baby.
