Younger Parkinsons wife frustrated ! - Parkinson's Disease Message Board

My husband was diagnosed at age 49, after we realized all the symptoms we were seeing (when put together) was actually something and not just annoying little bad habits. The tremors got really bad and then he started shuffling his feet. His neurologist at that point made the diagnosis. He is now having trouble with mental issues.....lack of reasoning, common sense, short term memory loss. Has anyone else seen problems like this in a younger patient? I know he's not doing it on purpose, but it's very frustrating and there is no support around here whatsoever except an 80 year old group of folks, who as nice as they are, really don't help.

Hi Sparrow,

It sounds like your husband could possibly have alzheimers also. The is early onset ad. The neurologist can do a MMSE test on him and that might help diagnose him, one way or the other.

My dad is 56 and with PD, and he has these same problems. I think some of it is the medication he is on, and some of it is the PD. We haven't been able to really do anything about it as of yet. I know this doesn't help, but I just wanted you to know that you are not alone in this. Hang in there.

Thanks for the response. I know it's not Alzheimer's, but it's nice to hear that another PD patient is having the same mental issues as my husband. I was beginning to think I was losing it and it's nice to know that it may be a normal piece of the PD.

Hello ,

Im 50 now was told i had PD at 43 and im here to tell you life goes on....im working still in a responsible job and I have become a very strong inependant woman. I must admit i get tried very quickly but dont we all get a little slower as we age?apart from that and a slight tremor if i get stressed i lead a perfectly normally life. I was totally devestated and starting the medication was worse than having pd but that time has passed and im stable andhave been for 5 years. When i was told and I went to a support group but i found it quite depressing as the group did have a lot of older members so i joined called YAPPS which caters for young onset of pd its brill ....stay positive and good luck x
