does anyone know if Progressive Supranuclear palsy (PSP) is genetic. My mum has just been diagnosed with this and the family are devastated. They want to know if there's a chance it will happen to them?

My nana was diagnosed with parkinsons in her early 50's and died at the age of 72, could this be related?

I don't know who to ask about it.

Does anyone know about this desease?

I feel bad for your mum. I've read different things about PSP while researching dystonia and PD. C A co-worker lost his dad to this condition last year. His father was well into his mid-80's when he passed. He had this condition for quite a long time before it was diagnosed.

To answer the genetic possibilities, I believe the answer is yes.

There's a possibility then that I inherited mine from my grandfather. He had Parkinson's for a very long time, but was never diagnosed until after dying from a cerebral hemorrage at 75 years.

The cause(s) of PSP are presently unknown. Most cases of Parkinsons Disease are "idiopathic" meaning unknown in origin, meaning not genetic. If you wish to improve your future course of health, get a lot of exercise. Coffee seems to have a neuroprotective effect. I'm sorry about your family member with PSP.

My dad died from this horrible disease in 2000. It is similar in some ways to ALS. As far as it being hereditary all I can say is that his brother has essential tremors and his sister also has some sort of neurological affliction that makes it difficult for her to walk.

I dont know the exact answer to this as I guess with every disese each case is different.

I lost my granddad to this and have read many many things over the years whilst he was ill and since he passed away.

I'm sorry your family is going through this, remember to get support for yourself too hun x
