Parkinsons or essential tremor??

I have recently developed a tremor in my right arm & hand. it seems worse when I am tired; better when I am doing something with that hand. I've had it for about 2 months. Today my doc said it may be early Parkinsons or essential tremor. How do they tell the difference? Is there a diagnostic test that can differentiate betwee the two/ Is treatment different? Thanks

Re: Parkinsons or essential tremor??

The biggest difference is that ET is an intension or action tremor -- it shows up when you do things like holding a spoon or a pen or buttoning a button, etc. Usually the doc will have you draw a tight spiral on a paper while holding your hand up. Unlike Parkinson's it doesn't occur when your hands are at rest. There are lots of sources of tremors other than those two. A neurologist can easily diagnose and tell you about treatments.
