This is a subject we pwps don't think about, but the more we learn, the better prepared we will be. Dementia affects aboutr 30% of pd patients, or another way to look at it is 70% of us arer not affected.
Dementia of pd is an evolving process like pd itself. At one point it is apparent to all before that point it is there but not apparent, and can be unmasked by drugs.
Sundown syndrome is a behavior that is described as confusion, anxiety, agitation, or disorientation that often occurrs at dusk and into the evening hours. The episodes may last a few hours or throughout the night.
While the cause is unknown, experts believe there are several contributing factors. These include physical and mental exhaustion, and a shift in the "internal body clock" caused by the change from daylight to dark. Some people havw trouble sleping at night, which may contribute to their disorientation. Medication that can cause agitation or confusion also may contribute to the syndrome.
