My dad was just diagnoised - Parkinson's Disease Message Board

Hi All:

My dad was just diagnoised with PD and a dementia. He is going for further testing.

In the meantime I have a couple of questions. First of all his doctor stated that there are two different kinds of PD and that they need to determine which one he has. Does anyone know what they are talking about? And does each different type have different symptoms that we should be looking for?

I am very depressed and afraid. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kimi, I have had pd for twelve years, and this is the first time i have read of two types of pd, unless the docor meant pd with or without dementia. Dementia is seen in the later stages of pd.

Their are parkinson-like disorders which are not pd. They are sometimes lumped together as parkinson plus disorders. You might have to ask the doctor what he means by that statement.

Pd affects a specific part of the brain and the other disorders may affect different parts of the brain.

Thank you Bruce.

I probably should have made clear that dad's primary doctor has diagnoised PD. And states that he definitly has it. His right hand tremors terribly.

However, his CT Scan is set up for this Weds. and he doesn't see the neurologist until August 26th. But will see his primary again on August 15th-hopefully we will get all the results then.

I guess, we are going to have to wait until the results.

But if you all do not mind, I think that I will be on this board throughout this time.

Kimi, the ct scan is done to rule out brain tumors. So don't expect anything significant.

I can't give you the specific web site, but Dr. Leiberman the director of the NPF, has writtened an excellent book just for people like you. It's called "Shaking up parkinsons" and he tells what to expect when you see a neurologist.
