obsessive compulsive behavior in pd people including sex, gambling, praying, shopping
Although OCD is rare (1%), studies in the past year on people with advanced pd taking dopamine agonists such as mirapex, revealed a slight increase in OCD compared to ther general population. 559 patients were evaluated and an incidence of 1.5 % OCD was found in pd patients. The rate for the general population was 0.3%-1.5%.
When an obsession becomes compulsive, the results can be devasting, and can take over a person's life. The OCD may be gambling, overeatinjg, sex, shopping or praying.
It is believed the causes of the effect are a low serotonin level and fluctuations in the dopamine level.
Treatment may be lowering or deleting the dopamine agonist, and prescribing an antidepresent such as prozac.
