 New study: epilepsy drug appears to restore brain function in mice with PD
Usually, i am skeptical of many studies that claim to rstore brain function in PD research, but this study was done at Columbia University and was funded in part by the Parkinon's Disease Foundation.
The research team infused D-b-hydroxybutyrate (DbHB) into mice with MPTP induced PD. What they found was DbHB restored the function of the mitochondria and protected against neurodegeneration in PD induced mice.
The dopamine levels remained constant in the mice given the medication. The study indicates a critical role for mitochondrial defect in Parkinson's Disease.
The drug is already being used to trerat epilepsy. It has an additional advantage of being able to cross the blood-brain barrier.
