Exclamation Parkinsonism or something else?

Hello,
This is my first time posting. My Mother was "diagnosed" with Parkinsons disease a few years ago (she is 58 now). She was obviously devastated and went to see the top experts in the field for treatment. She has seen experts at most major hospitals in NYC and not one doctor could agree on what she actually had. One doctor said she didn't have anything at all and to not come back, another said they didn't know what it was, another said it was parkinsonism, another agreed it was nothing and was probably psyhcological (she has some anxiety and hx of depression but not other major psych issues). She is currently going to see another specialist at Mt. Sinai in a few weeks. I am going with her because both her and my Dad seem a little laid back about all of this and I think we need to pushing a little harder for answers. Anyway I was wondering if anyone had any experiences similar or what we could do to help her. She has been on Simenet for a few years now and she is doing fine, mostly her walking is a off (shuffling a bit). She also tends to "space out" and move slowly. She has no tremors of any kind. Her hand writing has gone down hill (smaller and smaller as time goes on). Her current neuro MD is horrible and couldn't answer any of my questions about what he thinks this might be. Any advice would be appreciated.
-Sara

Re: Parkinsonism or something else?

My husband suffered with PD for over 25 years so I am pretty familiar with this. It certainly sounds like PD, but there are so many similar diseases out there. You need a good neurologist who specializes in movement disorders and one that really knows how to prescribe the proper meds. Before you go to another doc make sure you ask if he or she specializes in movement disorders.

You say she has no tremors of any kind. Is that because she's taking Simenent? What exactly is the drug doing for her? Does she have tremors without the drug?

Re: Parkinsonism or something else?

Why is she taking Simenet? What is it doing for her? I don't understand the purpose of taking a drug when there is still doubt about which diagnosis is correct.

Why is she taking Simenet? What good, if any, is it doing? Why take a drug if there is still some doubt as to which diagnosis is correct?

Re: Parkinsonism or something else?

I stll think another specialist is in order to see. I find that asking my primary care doctor for a referral works well since those docs seem to know everyone and if you have good communiction with your primary they will tell you the truth. I have had mine tell me not to see such and such a doctor so he is honest to me in his opionion, which I respect.
Don't give up until you are satisfied. When our doc left town many of us followed him from Nebraska to Tenn. just to see him every four months. We were left here without a really fine doctor specializing in PD.
