" AGORAPHOBIA "......, anyone have this ?

Hello to ALL,

Just wondering........................,

Does anyone have this ? Or should I ask........,
' Does anyone here, have agoraphobia and feel the need to talk about IT? '

Webster says, agoraphobia.............., ' fear of open spaces '.

I don't know to what degree I have this..............,
I do not go anywhere much, without my GH being with me.
He does the grocery shopping, he does everything for me. Sometimes I go
with him, and sometimes I stay at home.
I have always been independant, as my Mom taught me to be. So, this is
a real big deal for me.

I have owned and opperated my ' Hair Salon ', for years. I had to quit several
years ago, because of my bum knee, AND, I was starting to have difficulties
managing my Business.
I felt okay, as long as I controlled my own environment, however when it
came to going outside of my box, so to speak, I would just start shaking,
uncontrollably and most of the time, I ended up in a panic attack.

I live in a very small town, down south. I have a history of being Bipolar.
When I was diagnosed, in 1985 IT was called ' Manic Depressive Illness ' !
I was told by my BP Doctor that I had a mild case. I was just so glad to
hear that whatever this hellish NIGHMARE I had been through had a NAME !
I think ' Bipolar ', sounds better.

I absolutely HATE living here. We live right on the main drag, right in the
middle of town.
I know it's not the people....., it is me, who has the problem.
However, I don't know what to do about IT !
I have lost contact with my friends, and they are out working and having a
life.
My GF who I did go out to eat and shopping (in another town), with, has
moved out of town. So, I don't have anyone to pal around with...,

This year I have been worse in some ways, and better in others.
Uhhhh, in June of last year, I have some health problems, which have caused
the glands in my neck to swell. So, I look somewhat like a chipmunk.
I have never been so upset about my appearance.
I did let my hair grow out, but I saw some photos of myself recently, and
OMG, I looked awful !!!

One GREAT thing that has happened to make me better is that my BPDoctor
put me on ' Lexapro ', about this time last year, and I could tell a difference,
in just a few days !
I take 10mgs., at night. It has truly been the miracle med., for me !

If anyone would like to shed some light on this subject, please REPLY...,
Thanks,
Gee Gee

Re: " AGORAPHOBIA "......, anyone have this ?

Hi Gee Gee!

I don't think I am agoraphobic (btw my depression fog lifted so I'm all hyper giddy but seemingly able to do my job just in time to meet my deadline tommorrow) but I occasionally have strong desires to not leave my house. There have been many times where I found Walmart (and Target and Malls too) to be much to loud, annoying, and full of too many choices to be handled. As a result I've had full out panic attacks in the store only to escorted out by security for the aggressive scene I caused or because thought I was having heart troubles. I once thought everyone in the mall was staring at me cause they thought I had free tickets to a concert to give out. Anyway this is an unpleasant feeling, but unfortunately I am single and have family or friends to depend on so I had to find ways to deal with it. My defence in order of usage as needed:

visit the store during nonpeak hours (I often do superwalmart at 2am)

wear earplugs (this one is usually all I need)

listen to soothing music on walkman/mp3 player

avoid eye contact if becoming paranoid

if presented with too many choices shut your eyes and just grab one and move on telling yourself it really is okay that you didn't think about much

use self check out so the check out lady or other people in line don't annoy you

and finally. . . . take a tranquilizer!

And don't worry about you appearance, there are plenty people who look worse and don't even know it. Aspire to be one of those people. Ignorance really is bliss. Besides it's more important that you physically comfortable when leaving your "safe" places. It's a way to bring the comfort of your safe place with you when go out. I've been known to grocery shop in PJs and flip flops while hugging my favorite couch pillow.

I know it is isolationist to not join the real world when going out and my therapist will disapprove of my not making the effort, but if it works and you feel better then by all means do it!

If you want to beat it with "tools" you can always gradually desensitize yourself. Try going out to a store with a small crowd and walking around for ten minutes while breathing deeply. When you'r done go get a some ice cream or nap or some other reward. The next day (or next week depending on how slow you want to go) try for fifteen or twenty minutes. Keep increasing until you get to thirty minutes then do thirty minutes as many times and as often as it takes for you handle being out without a second thought.

Oh and I wouldn't reccommend hopping from store to store doing research or searching for a product EVER. It only serves to agitate you and undo all your hard work to leave the house in the first place. Research online, and call the store to see if they have what you want. It saves lives, and I'm not referring yours.

Re: " AGORAPHOBIA "......, anyone have this ?

My friend has a similar anxiety, but it involves driving on freeways. Lexapro and Wellbutrin keep her functional. She also has the luxury of working at home (she's a writer), so getting out of the house is often a treat, as long as she drives on surface streets.

My personal hang-up is large crowds. Although I've never had a panic attack, I do get very irritated and annoyed by people around me. If you've ever walked the sidewalks of Hong Kong and bumped into tourists, you'd know what I'm talking about. My deal is that, as long as the flow of a crowd is generally harmonious, I don't care how many people are going in how many directions around me. However, when someone breaks the flow and ignorantly stands in my way or backs things up, it bothers me so much that I want to wring their necks. Can you tell that this normally happens when I'm manic? Remember, if you're walking down a sidewalk, stay to your right and you'll be peachy-keen. If you walk to your left, move slowly, stand in the middle of the pavement or insist on walking side-by-side with your three best friends, so help me you're asking for trouble! And, for G's sake, if you're going to pass me, do so to my left and call it out to me. This is essential if you're rollerblading or bicycling while passing a pedestrian.

I'm a fairly petite person, so when I come across pedestrian party traffic that's excruciatingly slow, I duck and weave in and out so I can keep my stride. I annoy my husband because he thinks it's rude, but I hate feeling helpless and at the mercy of someone else's pace. Big guys, by the way, bother me the most when they're walking against traffic -- I'm always afraid they're going to topple me by sticking a limb in my way or falling on me.

Sorry about the rant. No, I don't have agoraphobia, but I do have lots of hang-ups -- some that are enough to push me over the edge into mania. BTW, that's another thing that scares me -- when I'm in a large crowd and something controversial is going on. There's always a chance for the mob mentality to break out and cause rioting. I lived through the L.A. riots and saw the senseless pillaging that took place in the city when the Lakers won the championship a couple years back. I'm already nuts, don't want to be around people who will only make me more nuts

I have agoraphobia. The large crowds, driving further than 2 miles from my home, and being stuck in traffic freak me out bad.

Re: " AGORAPHOBIA "......, anyone have this ?

My dr. diagnosed me a while back as panic disorder with agoraphobia. I understood that as fear of going away from safe places, such as home. But I don't have agoraphobia....I enjoy being with my friends and away from home. The only thing that has developed recently are panic attacks while driving, usually on the interstate. I have had panic for 10 years, and this is totally new for me. But I think the diagnosis of agoraphobia was wrong for me.

From GeeGee......, Hi ! Reesie,
Hey ! THANKS for all of your advice and encouraging words !
I just wish I could say the right words to explain what I mean, and how I
feel.

Here's what I am faced with..., (This is sooo very hard to understand !)....,
I am sitting here, trying to talk myself into going to the Bank !

I know you will think this is, well uhhhh,
anyway, I can see the Bank from my yard. I am serious, I could spit on it !
Nuuuuuuuuuuuu, I would NEVER walk down there.....,

All I have to do is get in my car, drive to the bank,
drive up to the window, and conduct my business, and drive back home.
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh......,.... ..,

AND, I don't know if I can do this...............,

Let me hear from you, okay ?

In the middle of a ' whatever '..........,(SOMETHING !)
GeeGee

PS.
Heck, I don't know what this is.........., I guess I need to read up on this
subject, and also talk to my BP Doctor.
I just Hate that everything has to have a label or a tag on IT !

Re: " AGORAPHOBIA "......, anyone have this ?

This thread is very interesting to me. Thanks everyone for sharing. I get that way but only sort of. I don't mind being in my house or with my coworkers, but I get like totally stupid talking to people and I think thats why I cant go anywhere. Like I just say the dumbest stuff and then I freak out about it, like all day and everyday about. I don't even like talking to my kids sitters anymore because I am such an idiot. I guess I have more of an insecurity problem. I don't know. Anyhow I have enjoyed reading the comments here.

I don't even know why I posted this here. I guess I am lonely - LOL!

From GeeGee,
I am so glad you have found this thread interesting ! WAIT, WAIT.....,
" You are NOT an idiot, Okay ?
I totally admire you for being able to hold down a job !

I am glad to know that you like the comments here.....,
I was beginning to think this Thread was going to take a DIVE....,
I am so glad NOT !

I just love people and I guess I am a ' people person ',
but, in my own little world, most of the time !

I promise you that I know what you mean about talking to people.
Our oldest Daughter, makes me feel very uncomfortable.

It seems like she just keeps on keeping on, when I get my words mixed up,
and I guess I let her make me feel insecure.
I usually stay out-ta-wah, when I am around my own Kids.

Listen, You can come back here, to talk or whatever....., OKAY ?

I hope you are not lonely anymore...., LOL.

Take Care, and let me hear from you, okay ?

Wishing You, Well and Happy Days..., I hope you have a great weekend !
GeeGee
