Have any of you had to have your pituitary gland checked?
and if so, Why??? What was the reasoning behind it.
My Dr. said he may send me for an MRI on my pituitary gland when I have all of the classic symptoms of Hashimoto's Disease. Is he just being overly cautious or do I need to worry about having a tumor? I'm already worried about having thyroid cancer because he sent me for a ultrasound, (just did that yesterday so I don't know the outcome yet).
Re: Have any of you had to have your pituitary gland checked?
I had one and it was to check for a tumor. I didn't have one, but my dr. said my pituitary gland was probably sluggish. Your pituitary gland is what tells your brain how much thyroid hormone to produce. This is where your tsh comes from (I think I have it right, someone else feel free to correct me if not).
Re: Have any of you had to have your pituitary gland checked?
Some docs think that if you have a low (or so-called "normal" TSH) with hypo symptoms it must be the pituitary gland not putting out enough TSH. Ususally the case is that the range for TSH is useless for diagnosing most cases of hypothyroidism, especially Hashi's. Hashi's can do all sorts of things to the thyroid and affect the TSH levels up and down so it's a bad test to use to diagnose. So I'm guessing this is a case of CYA on the part of your doc.

I am having a MRI on my brain on Monday for the same reason you are and I had a ultrasound 3 weeks ago on my thyroid. It found 2 large and 1 small nodules. It is a very worrisome time waiting for results on both test, I understand where your coming from and I can sympathize with you. We just have to pray for a good outcome.
