new to the group

hi i am a new member & am looking forward to connecting with y'all. i am 51 & contracted polio when i was 6 weeks old. it affected my left leg & foot. have drop foot & leg is very atrophied. have pps & am going through some serious depression because up until my 40's i could push to get it all done & i was a master at it !! now, i am so very limited & it is getting the best of me lately. i have become very isolated, as i feel "normal" people do not understand my condition (family included) & am becoming more & more depressed. however, the connection i now have with y'all should really help me ---- as i was noverbally taught early on to pretend i'm ok. polio has affected my brain & tha's what bothers me the most ----- have no memory to speak of & get terrible brain fog, & without sufficient sleep (at least 6 hrs. every night) i go into a paranoid mode & it feels really strange. well, going to get ready for church ---- just wanted to get "my feet wet" with this group thing ! susan

Re: new to the group

Welcome to the forum, I joined about a year ago. I have not posted a lot here as there seemed to be limited activity. Maybe that is going to change. Ted

Re: new to the group

thanks for your welcome! i hope the forum gets busier because we all need one another's support. it can be a lonely world sometimes when it appears everyone is carrying on their lives in such an easy fashion. did they ever have to go to buy shoes time & time again, only to walk out of the store with nothing but disappointment because there wasn't that one certain pair that worked for them ---- they just go in, pick out their style, try it on & voila they have a new pair of shoes. how about when i hear people talk about not being able to wear shorts because they have a couple of ugly veins they don't want people to see ---- well, how about having one leg MUCH smaller than the other ! along with dropfoot ! & all the emotional stuff that goes along with that ?! susan

Re: new to the group

Hi Susan,
I know what you mean about the shoes and shorts. I was not able to wear "normal shoes" as the others. When I got my first braces, they had large white baby style shoes attached. I thought they were girls shoes and hated them, the braces, the polio, my rehab, or just about everything. I was not a cooperative patient. They sent me home to just sit in a chair - Mom did not agree. My next pair of shoes I got were still hightop but at least they were brown. Since I was hit in both legs, I still had equal size needs. I never was comfortable in non-hightop style shoes. Of course now I am back in short braces, I am using black boots attached to the metal braces again. I will wear shorts now when it is just too hot. I just really don't care what some stranger thinks about what I need to keep me mobile. Of course that means I can no longer just go out and buy off the rack shoes. Such is the price we have paid for a lifetime.

Re: new to the group

Welcome to the board. Seems the original Polio surely affected so many of us in different but than again not so different. Everytime I see new names, I want to make sure I get to say Welcome.

I had Polio when I was 4 years, it affected my left leg mainly weakness and my leg being a bit smaller than my other.. I did not have braces at the time- but wore shoes that had to be higher than the other. I was not hospitlized that I remember- but did see a specialist who had me doing special exercises for my bad leg..

Long story shorter, I now have PPS and probably have all but the breathing problems at this point. I wear both legs braced, use crutches when my arms and hand allow me and soon will be getting a PC. It is so hard at times to try and stay positive But we must in order to survive..

be well
Janet

Re: new to the group

hi susan, eilleen, ted, and everybody else here, and of course,Janet ...susan and eillen, with your drop foot, did you ever have any surgeries done for that?...through my whole childhood and adult life,i never ever came across anyone who had polio, and just in the past month of learning about this PPS,and finding my way onto this board,i have been amazed at how many people are out there with polio,so yes,i too feel like i finally have people who can relate to me...

i had polio at age 10months,but doctors didnt find out till i was 3 yrs. old...my left leg was affected, and my left foot(drop foot)..i had two surgeries done on my foot when i was age 9,tendon transfers, and triple arthrodesis,so that foot is completely stabilized...in the past eleven years,i've had three surgeries, due to bone growths, which i think are similar to bone spurs, but i dont get them in places that normal people get them though, mine are on the bottom of foot,or outer edge of my foot...the last two were only 3 years apart,so its becoming more frequent, and every time they file down a bone,it creates another area where one can develop...has anybody ever had this problem?...i have a lot of foot pain,my leg tires out more now,so then it causes problems in other areas like my hip and thigh,my knee gives out more frequent than before...i never knew about this PPS till a month ago,so like you eilleen,i'm thinking i should see a doctor but finding one isnt so easy though...i find myself "tensing up" the upper leg,and have to tell myself to relax constantly...i am a meatcutter so i work in the "cold",and for the past year or so,i've been telling myself and others, that my job just seems to be taking everything out of me anymore, and my leg tiring out more, all causing me to be so tired when i get home, and then i find out about this PPS and find out that i'm not the only one going thru this...what i did not take as "symptoms" before,i find out they are "symptoms"...i pretty much use a cane around the house or when i go out for the past couple years, not knowing i was following in a pattern of what was to come...well i hope everyone is doing well...cheryl

Re: new to the group

Welcome Eileen! Its always good to hear from someone new to the board. Its good that you can talk to others that relate. Its so neat to be reading about someone and you say "wait a minute, that sounds like me"! I had polio at 11 months and soon will be 60. I over "DO" all the time but lately even when I basically shut down all physical activity I am just zapped. Probably paying for the days prior. The coldness in the feet and legs, oh my word, it is awful. Some days it just makes me sick all over. Mine is from the top of my knees down and gets worse towards my feet. I have an electric throw in my recliner and one on my side of the bed and believe me I use them liberally. Cheryl, I worry about you so much. With you continuing to work as a meatcutter, in that cold, you're a better woman than I. I know you have to do what you have to do. How long did you say you had to work til? I'm signing off for now, hope everyone has a good as possible day and always remember the glass is always half full not half empty. Love everyone, Phyllis
