Sister Kenny Treatments

Having had polio in 1950 at the age of 2, I got the 'Sister Kenny' rehab; the hot packs and water therapy.
Anybody else remember that? Anyone have any other treatment?
When I became paralyzed, the doctors said to my mother to put me in a sanitarium for the rest of my life because I was 'crippled' and to forget about me.
Needless to say, even as a small child, I think our "A" type personalities come out and we fight harder than others around us to do what comes easily for them.
Like many of you, I had never been around another person with polio until investigating pps in 1990. There are millions of us left.

Re: Sister Kenny Treatments

Welcome- I did not have the Sister Kenney method- I was not put in the hospital like many... But I have had since read about it- Horrible some of the treatment that was given- my heart goes out to all.

I just went to a specialist and we did PT- I was much luckier than alot - but bottom line I survived and now has PPS like so many. Now into braces, crutches and soon a PC. PPS is so unpredictable alot like Polio was.

You are so right there are millions out there- more people with PPS than MS and alot of other neurogolical disorders/diseases.

Hugs and Welcome Janet
There are alot of books and websites that explain so much and some can be very contradicting.

Re: Sister Kenny Treatments

Hi Nelda, I didn't have the sister kenny treatments either, when I got polio the health dept. here sent me to warm springs. My dad was in a wheelchair so he was home all the time, He said I was parlyzied from the waist down and the treatment there was to put me in a straight-jacket to stop me from trying to move. But after about a year of that and he had had enough, every time he would take it off to give me a bath or try pt I would scream and cry he said he threw that thing in the fire and at my next appointment told them it was not working and he thought it was doing more harm than good. So no more straight-jackets for me. All I remember about warm springs is the braces and shoes I had to have every 6 months, they were high and we didn't have a lot of money. Now I have 2 braces and they are still high and we still don't have a lot of money: LOL But we keep on going, we are a puzzle to the rest of the world, but we can face more than most because we have been through more. have a blessed day Ronnie
