Children after Polio

:)Good evening everyone! My mother had polio at the age of 4. She would be 60 now if she didn't pass away from cisrosis <sp> of the liver 18 years ago. My sister and I have questions regarding children of post polio patients. You see both my sister and I suffer anxiety and a few other things and we started talking about things and wondered if anyone has children that were some how effected from the polio or the drugs given as a result? Does anyone know if there was ever a study regarding this?
Thanks a bunch!
Sharon

I'm sorry I don't know, but I also had Polio at 4 years old and was never able to have children. The doctors could never figure out why, but I always blamed the polio cure drugs.

Hi again CherPPS... I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't have children.. I just read your post to Sharon... I don't know if there is a study or not... when I got polio, there were no drugs... just extensive physical therapy... which got me up and about...

Re: Children after Polio

A great source I have found for information re PPS is Dr Richard Bruno who wrote The Polio Paradox. His contact information is in the back of his book, and he does answer his email!! I never had children. However the only medication I know of that I was given for polio were antibiotics. I had polio in 1951 at age 3, and according to the age you said you Mom would be, she would be about a year younger than I am. Seriously would doubt it, but Dr Bruno would be a great source for you.

I was told they used lots of penicillin but my Mom doesn't remember much about it.

My mom had what we refer to as train tracks all over her legs and back from multiple surgeries. I know they had tried several different drugs if not for the polio then the drugs from the surgerys. I know back then they really didn't tell you what they were giving and just expected everyone to take it and not question it as we do today.

Thank you everyone who responded to my questions! I appreciate all the information you have shared.

Re: Children after Polio

I have the late effects; had 4 children. My children and their children have been advised to find out their carnitine levels. Polio depletes this and many children have been deemed to 'be lazy' instead of drs trying to find the root cause.
Unfortunately many polios have tried to forget having had it and refuse to look beyond their noses.

Thank you so much for your response. I will for sure have these levels checked. I know my mom was involved with "trials" when she was young. I just don't understand how if someone had polio (drug treatments also) before they had children that it did not effect the cells that were then passed on to the children? Anyways Thanks again for your response and giving some place else to look.

Re: Children after Polio

Hi Xcaligurl,
I also had polio at age 4. However I was never able to have children and with all the specialists that I went to said I was fine, so I always beleived in my heart that it was the durgs I was given in 1959. My theripst is about my age and her Mom has post polio, I could ask her for you. I think she got polio after her kids were born but she lives with it now. If I can get any info from her I'll let you know.
Prayers,
Cher

I never gave it any thought of my children having any effects from my polio... but now that you gave it a name..(carnetine levels) ..I will forward the advise to my children & grands and great grands.... I have 1 son who seems to be lazy... he always has to be pushed into doing things... all the rest of my children (4) are all go getters.. and there might be a couple of grands who might have the same problem especially 1 son of my son......just likes to sit around the house & watch tv and play game on it and he is 15yrs old and should be interested in many other things... his brother (14) on the other hand is full of life...and is always doing something... thanks for the info... Re: Children after Polio

Hi excaligirl! I understand what your asking, i'm like the others, there is no evidence of children being born with side effects after parent had polio, but i wonder if you may have anxiety due to certain bahavoirs your mom may have displayed? I have a son who is 17, he doesn't suffer from anxiety but he is very cautoius of things around him, he has never liked carnival rides, he suffers alot of motion sickness. I am not sure if it's linked to my having polio, or if i contributed these things to him due to me being disabled. iI have always been nervous, and anxoius my whole life, ( contacted polio at 2mths) I didn't realize that it may have been linked to polio. Just something to think about. I wonder if i passed something on to him? hmm

Hello, I had polio in 1954 and I am now 57 with sons 29 & 24. Neither have problems with anxiety. It could have been caused by your mom if she had a drinking problem. Sorry.

Re: Children after Polio

 Hi there, EXCELLENT question!!! Bless you for asking. I had Polio at age 7, in 1954. There were no drugs available at that time.
My first son was born in 68, than another in 1970.

I FIRMLY believe Polio not only leaves Plysical scars on the person who contracted the disease, but emotional scars, as well for the entire family involved. These Emotional scars manifest themselves in vastly different ways. This topic to my knowledge has never been evaluated, or studied and I have often wondered why.
