plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

Hi, im 18 and I have just been told I have PCOS. My doctor didnít really tell me anything about it, she just told me I had it and I donít really understand what it is. Up till now I have always had good skin and normal periods, however this is no longer the case. What I donít understand is should I have not got the symptoms when I first had my periods?? I have started to show symptoms such as acne, and I also get really bad cramps in my stomach and back throughout the month (is that normal).?? I donít seem to have the other symptoms described like excess hair, loss of hair or weight. Iím not at a position at the moment where I want children but the whole infertile thing really scares me? Is there anything I can do or should be doing?? It would be great if some one could try and answer some of my questions cos I have no one else who can answer them.

Cool Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

Hello.....wow I was pretty much diagnosed today as well.....
To answer one of your questions, no you wouldn't necessarily have the symptoms from the onset of your period. Some women do, while others develop them later. I started having symptoms around 18, they got way worse around 22-25, and I am being diagnosed at 28.
Also, many women with PCOS have children. There are medicines and things that can help you if/when you want a family.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions. I know its hard, since sometimes doctors may not take your concerns seriously, but this is your body and your treatment. You should have all your questions answered. Did your dr diagnose through bloodwork, ultrasound?

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

Thanks for replying. Yeah I had some blood tests done and from that she said I had it. She said I could have an ultra sound done but she didnít see the point because the blood tests showed it, she didnít really explain it to me I was only in there two minutes. This sounds really vain but my skin is getting worse and worse and she gave me some cream and its doing nothing. Is this something you suffer with and if it is what do you use?? Are you talking any medication to cure the PCOS or help with symptoms?

I am not currently taking any meds for pcos. i am going for my ultrasound in a few weeks. I am not using anything for my skin, since the acne isn't a major symptom for me. Maybe you should call your dr. and tell her you need more information about your course of treatment. Unfortunately, some drs take this less seriously than others (although that may not be the case w/your dr) Its possible she/he thought she answered your questions. Are you on any other medicine for the pcos? Birth control pills and metforim (sp?) are commonly prescribed. There is no "cure" for pcos, but alot of women have found that diet is extremely important in treating it.

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

No my doctors is rubbish, and I am probably going to move. I am going to go privately to go see a specialist, and so I can get an ultra sound done quickly and get some more information, i.e. see what hormone is affected so I can try and help by looking at the types of food I need. Also they will probably be able to deal with the cramps etc and hopefully they will give me some more information about my condition. Yeah they put me onto Dinette (not sure how its spelt) to help with skin and regulate periods and they have given me cream for my skin. But it really does not seem to be helping with the symptoms at all. What is metforim?

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

Metformin helps with insulin resistance (at least in my case). If it makes you feel better I have PCOS and at the age of 32 had my little girl 2 months ago. I felt the same way you did. I had never heard of PCOD before.Frankly I've learned more from this board than from any doctor.Luckily for me my doctor admitted he knew nothing about PCOD and referred me to a fertility specialist who put me on the Metformin.

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

I have PCOS and my doctor told me i have had it ever since i started my periods. PCOS does get worse with age. But there are medications you can take to get pregnate which i heard you say your not ready for quite yet. But you are luck to find it so early in your age. im 24 and i have been married for almost 5 years and we want to have a baby now and i found out i have PCOS. so im on Metformin 500mg 1 per day... Parlodel 2.5mg tab per day... and most important to start taking 3 months before you get pregnate is FOLIC ACID 1mg per day. Plus i get an extra boost of FOLIC ACID with my multi vitamin i take.. an di take Prometrium 3 times a day for my Progesterone since i lake Progesterone after i ovulate. and i take Clomid day 3-7 or 4-8 and im on 150mg of that. Clomid at the higher dose has been giving me good follys to ovulate. So my doc is expecting a pregnancy out of me any time soon.

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

Just out of curiosity I've noticed that a lot of ladies with PCOD take a combination of drugs. Does your doc go right to using the fertility drugs or did you do the Metformin first? My doc said he wouldn't put me on Clomide until he did a year of Metformin. I luckily conceived around 5 months. I was given the progesterone after I conceived for the first trimester due to bleeding. My husband and I are talking about another baby in a few years which will put me around 35 and I expect to have some issues conceiving again so any information would be appreciated. What type of drugs were you taking before you decided to start a family to manage the PCOD?I'm on nothing now (10 weeks postpartum) except yasmin21 and from what I've been reading I think I should be on something for the PCOD and maybe see a specialist of some kind.

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos and am confused

My GP uses the term PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease). It is just another term for PCOS. It can also be called Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Like you I didn't have a clue I had this problem until I tried to have a child and after 2 years my GP sent me to fertility specialist and he did blood work and ultrasounds and diagnosed me. Did your doctor mention anything about changing your diet and exercise (if you're overweight)? I had to lose some weight before I got pregnant with the Metformin.

Re: plz help I have just been told i have pcos/ NEW QUESTION

I was diagnosed about 2 months ago. I had posted a question, and no one replied, so maybe here someone will. I have been on metformin for 7 weeks. 1000 mg a day. I have had no side effects at all, not one single effect. NOTHING.(some of you may be ready to kill me!) I am wondering if it is working. I have lost no weight, my appetite is still outrageous (I have an over abundance of male hormones and to few female - I was already on BCP's so my OB/GYN said that "masked" the symptoms of the facial hair and other things). Should I be feeling something? WEight loss? Loss of appetite somewhat? Maybe I need a higher dose. Totally confused..any input would be appreciated.
